I think from earlier posts they can get pregnant from about 4 months old, but they have to weigh a certain amount (sorry can't remember what the weight is) to be spayed. Phone any vet and they will tell you the exact details. Good on you for getting her sorted.

Many of the large rescues now say 1kg is optimum age. They need less anesthetic, smaller scar, easier operation all round and no more kittens.

As Newbiz says - they can get pregnant at just 4 months so just make sure she doesn't go out of the house until totally sorted. Well done for being on the ball.

I think for female kittens they mustn't be in season at the time of speying ... not sure why, just remember from when Feargal went (and oh yes, you will defo know when she is in season LOL - thought Fergie was mortally wounded at first !!)

i've heard lots of different opinions on age and weight for neutering and i think vets vary on what age they're happy / equipped to neuter at. my most recent kittens were done at 1kg which is smaller than any of the others i've taken to be 'done'. the girls seem to have come back fine from it. they're best kept inside until they're a bit older anyway so if they're not going to come into other cats they can get pregnant with maybe theres no rush .... but once its done its done and you can stop worrying about unwanted pregnancies.

We have a 3mth old boy cat, how old does he have to be to have the snip?

Thanks in advance.

They can do it from about 5/ 6 months, Mafya, definitely:- the kitteh has to be about 1 kilo in weight, or above, for most vets to consider neutering him currently. Contact the vet surgery themselves, to check what sort of age/ weight they do the op from, as it varies slightly from vets to vets.

I had my Georgie kitten (Now 7 months) done, the other week at Highfield Vets on London Road, who only charged £38 for the whole thing, including the pre- op check to ensure he was healthy enough to have the op. I'd recommend them, highly, he's absolutely sound as a pound, now.

The op is really simple, not that invasive (certainly less invasive than a spay on a female) the kitteh is only under the anaesthetic for about 10/ 15 mins, and a couple of hours' recovery under the care of the surgery, afterwards. Georgie was back to normal, the day after, doing the wall of death round my living room, as per usual.
