Why all the anxiety?

Just call the bank and ask for your money back.

Because nothing in my experience is ever that easy lol, theres always a fuss and an arguement .

Yes its definately a direct debit i shall ring the bank tomorrow and tell them i want my money back, Thanks everyone :)

anniec is right - call the bank and tell them its a claim under the direct debit guarantee - they will arrange a refund straight away and cannot refuse.

Make sure it IS a Direct Debit though, and not a card payment, or even a standing order - in which case you are NOT covered under the DD Guarantee.

This is correct but banks are always reluctant to refund under the Direct Debit guarantee, basically because they then have to retrieve the money from the company. Go to your bank and fill in the form. Don't let them fob you off though. The direct debit guarantee is there to protect you. The money should be refunded immediately, but the bank will try to prolong it. Read up on Direct Debit indemnity and go to the bank with all the information you have gathered, make it clear that you know your rights otherwise you might just have a fight on your hands.

Will they do this even tho the insurance company say they cant find my call cancelling the policy? Whats made it harder is this all happened in july so all paperwork has been binned, I never received a new policy so just assumed it was cancelled and sorted, Thanks Kathy

So you have online banking and you didn’t notice payments for August, September,October, November and possibly December were wrong.

What a load of drivel. It's this kind of misinformation and nonsense that makes mine, and everyone else who works in the front line of banking, twice as hard !

This is the only real part you might need to be aware of:

"If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when (the organisation) asks you to"

Either phone up, or go to your branch, ask nicely that you want to make an indemnity claim under the DD guarantee and the money will be back in your account straight away.

Just out of curiosity, if the bank knows you cancelled a DD (either by calling them, or online banking), why do they allow the money to be taked through that DD after it's been cancelled?

Possibly because the cancelation request was made too late? 24hours notice.
