Hey there,

I have been in bands singing & playing guitar for 6 years and have become very accustomed to live performance. I am looking to try and make a few extra pennies to help my band out with recording costs and would love some opportunities to perform. I can learn any songs you wish upon request, so i can cater for any audience you may wish.

I will even record you a song you wish to hear and email it you for a sample of what you'd be getting, can't say fairer than that!

Thanks

John

Just also adding, the fee I would be expecting would not be extortionate, and I'm sure I would certainly undercut some people, without being any less good.

If you are of a similar standard, or better. Never undercut others in the industry.

Local musicians are underpaid as it is when you compare the incomings to the out goings. Venues never seem to understand the running costs that musicians and djs can incurr.

Hey man, well yeh I know that much as anyone. In a band atm and most places skank you. Some worse than others, don't get me wrong I love playing live and things but places in Sheffield rarely give you a fair deal, and many far worse. That's the reason as to why I'm trying to earn some extra cash for myself to help the band. I read on here some people charge £120i-£150 which sounds like loads to me, I just meant I'll undercut that considerably.

Thanks

It's not loads at all when you think about it.

You're in a band, so you'll know this.

Think about what your guitars cost. Few hundred quid each. Your amp - again, few hundred. If you own a PA, as most pub bands have to, that's a few grand for a decent one. Our set up costs were about £4k overall, including full large, high quality PA, lighting rigs, insurance, PAT testing etc.

On that basis alone, you've spent thousands to do this job, why then sell yourself out at £50 a night?

Even looking at an hourly rate, for a band of say 4 people, £150 works out as £37.50 each. Bearing in mind, most venues need bands to bring PA, lights etc, and to do their own sound, it means that you're spending the best part of 6/7 hours in the venue, from say 5/6pm to midnight, including lugging loads of heavy gear around, costs of the van etc, for you each to see probably £30 after diesel.

30 quid for 7 hours work? That's less than minimum wage. Not even including your set up costs there. There's 6 in our band, so that'd be about £20 each, or £3 an hour.

Some venues are really good - West Street Live springs to mind - in that they check out the bands, and the good bands do fairly well, particularly as there's no PA needed, no lights, no sound tech. That's because WSL is owned by people who are/were musicians.

A lot of people don't realise the costs involved, but as a musician, if you're good, don't sell yourself short. Talent costs money. You can get some novice band with dodgy equipment that'll probably break for £50, but for a decent covers band, expect to pay more, particularly for large gigs. The reasons are clear to see.

Anyway, rant over, it's Christmas! :)

Well It would only be me doing it acoustically, and I was banking on lot of pubs already having the PA in place. If they didn't I would use my Fender Deville amplifier to put my mic through or something, few different options. As I wouldn't be splitting it, I could afford to do it for less than £120-£150 :)

If you fancy doing a bit of solo artist stuff. Call into the Bath Hotel (just off West Street), after 9pm and speak with Brian the landlord. He has solos and small piece bands on Sunday nights.
