Can members of the public go inside the Town Hall?

Why? It was only designed for incandescent light bulbs as that is all they had then. What is the cost of hiring labour and machinery to change these light bulbs every 2,000 hours or so, compared to LED light bulbs that can last 50,000 hours? In these times of austerity! Like the mighty Tesco says "every little, helps"

Why would they have hire labour and machinery to change the light bulbs?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the whole thing is designed to be lowered on pulleys. I'll take another look next time I'm in town.

I wouldn't be surprised if the electrolier was part of the Grade 1 listing of the building. You can't mess with the Town Hall, it's one of the few good buildings we have.

Yes, you can just walk in to the foyer and there's a little museum of Sheffield silverware just inside. It's well worth a look. You can't wander around at will but you can see the impressive big main staircase with its electrollier.

Even better is to go on the guided tour which is run in the summer months and is free :)

Thank you for your help. I will have a look at thta museum next time I go.
