dandydan1152 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I have often wanted to go inside the Town Hall, but does anyone know if it is open to the public, and if it is worth a visit?
Nagel Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Yes, you can just walk in to the foyer and there's a little museum of Sheffield silverware just inside. It's well worth a look. You can't wander around at will but you can see the impressive big main staircase with its electrollier. Even better is to go on the guided tour which is run in the summer months and is free

Sarkysod Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I agree, but nobody will show blind people to the toilets, because of the cut backs. What cut backs? With a professional eye I have noticed that the council are still using light bulbs with a low life expectancy. I would suggest they change to LED bulbs for such a decorative light fitting like the electrollier. This would reduce maintenance and running costs. Unless councils don't practice what they preach?

That 'electric' shock light thing only good on flys. And it's to cold for them to fly around. Most Councils are rubbish, and don't want the smelly populace inhabiting thier inner sanctum. I hope it falls of the ceiling.

I doubt the the "fly trap" is cold with at least 40-60 Watt light bulbs running. I also have to agree that the council would not want the populace inhabiting their inner sanctum. They may steal the chocolate hob nobs.

Hush, Roy Spittersby had his own room there. Everybody hopped on one leg and shaked each others noses and sang a mantra. Did OK for them!!

It would be complete sacrilege to use LED bulbs for the Town Hall electrolier. The Sheffield one is a very early example and of world importance and deserves to be seen lit by incandescent bulbs as it was designed for. I would even pay for the bulbs and electricity myself to ensure this happens, so if anyone from Sheffield Council is reading please feel free to message me about this.

It was only designed for incandescent light bulbs as that is all theyb had then. What is the cost of hiring labour and machinery to change these light bulbs every 2,000 hours or so, compared to LED light bulbs that can last 50,000 hours? In these times of austerity! Like the mighty Tesco says "every little, helps"
