bladesman123 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Does anyone know if the 4 new trams that supertram are to recieve will be the same as the existing ones or will they be different models? also is the train-tram plan still going to happen? Thanks, Dave.
RaxP Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I heard they are getting 3g wifi like the new busses.
WalkleyIan Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Its was not clear from the government's statement if they will also run on the proposed tram train link to Rotherham. This was the most recent news I could find on the web. http://www.britishtramsonline.co.uk/nov11/newssheffield2.html
Bilge Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 It says on that link they won't be operational for another 3 years! The network itself won't have changed, so we can't really get too excited about this. It's just a crumb thrown from the Tory top table to Clegg so he can wag his tail and claim he's done something for Sheffield.

Archi3 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I heard they are getting 3g wifi like the new busses. 3g and wifi are two different things. They will more than likely be fitted with wifi though.
Ghozer Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 3g and wifi are two different things. They will more than likely be fitted with wifi though. no, it's WiFi access throughout, but via the 3G network... so 3G WiFi is accurate...
wildnorthlands Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 It seems that not even Supertram and the PTE know whether these are the 4 new trams they needed to relieve congestion on the existing service or are supposed to cover Tram-train as well. The news that Phase 1 of the Bus Rapid Transit scheme, also running to Rotherham along the Don Valley corridor, has been funded muddies the water even more.
RaxP Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 no, it's WiFi access throughout, but via the 3G network... so 3G WiFi is accurate... Better put then I did, thanks. Its just a router that takes input from a 3g dongle instead of wired and stagecoagh seem to like this technology, although i don't know what they get out of it.
dosxuk Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Ah so we might be getting some of the Edinburgh trams, i was hoping they would be different, not that i dont like ones we have now - i think they are great, i just like a bit of variety They won't be the Edinburgh trams - they wouldn't make it up the hills. The Sheffield trams are the most powerful in the country as the system has the steepest hills found on any tram network. The current trams are custom designs for our city, so unless the contact goes to Siemens and they can dig out the old Duewag plans (and still buy all the parts), the new trams will have to be a new custom design.
