martynh99 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Before anyone says it, this wasn't a chinese lantern, the angle and speed just wouldn't have been possible. Was driving through warsop about 9:30ish towards worksop and saw what looked like a bright white light cross the sky at an angle of about 45 degrees. It seemed way closer than shooting stars usually look and much bigger, appeared round in shape and had a bit of a glow around it (guess that could just be the cloud absorbing some of the light). Anybody else see anything ?
martynh99 Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 might explain it ! http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/13dec_geminids/
Alcoblog Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 It's not often I bother posting on here now but ... 11.18pm ... just seen something falling at around 45 degrees through the sky (obviously) toward Stannington. It looked quite large and fairly close (maybe 2-3 miles). Also, it was travelling much slower than you'd expect from a shooting star.
martss Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Could be an Iridium Flare, that's sunlight reflecting off the solar panels on the Iridium Satellites, these are in a low orbit. They appear to get brighter and then gradually fade away, they don't move as fast as a meteor.

Good shout, though the last two visible from our area were more than 4 hours before, at 17.08 and 17.17, the former -o magnitude and the latter -2, so hardly noticeable.

I've got an app that shows predictions of the flares, I did check it, I thought it showed recent past flares as well as future ones but it doesn't now.

Heavens above does. Create an account there, it's free, you can access the latest info plus the last 48hrs.
Kokomo Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Alcoblog - I saw the same around the same time. As you said, falling at about 45 deg. Was very clear and had a slight green tint to the light as I saw it. Spectacular to see! BenW Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Yes I saw a really bright meteor last night, was around 1100. I knew the Geminids were due to peak last night so went to have a quick look before bed, as soon as I got to the window there it was! Best meteor I have seen in many years.
