I think First should not be putting the fares up but it makes me laugh how people are commenting about how good stagecoach drivers are, most of my ex colleagues work for them now through mainly sacked from first, So do they suddenly bacome nicer working for stagecoach!

As for stagecoach drivers stopping between stops, the driver is putting his job at risk, his licence and a big fine, It all actually depends what frame of mind the driver is in, we all have good and bad days first and stagecoach but don't blame the driver for a fare increase

I'll bet you couldn't insure it, tax it and park it for £747 though.

SYPTA information for South Yorkshire for the 12 months to April 2011:

Bus passengers have gone down by 1.9 million (-3.5%)

Tram passengers have gone up by 1.9 million (+14.3%)

Train passengers have gone up by 5.3 million (+52.3%)

AA says:

Car journeys down by 20% in Britain

How should this data affect our thinking?

Just to compare....

Stagecoach Sheffield 52 week Megarider

Sheffield Bus £475

Sheffield Tram £495

Sheffield Bus & Tram £540

Sheffield & Chesterfield Bus & Tram £620

Gold (all services in Yorks/Derbys/Notts) £770

Travel South Yorkshire/Stagecoach Supertram Park & Ride

at Nunnery Square, Middlewood and Halfway

ticket includes parking and unlimited tram travel

Quarterly ticket £150.80

(multiplied by 4 this comes to £603.20 per year)

The First Year South Yorkshire is cheaper than an annual season ticket for the train between Sheffield and Doncaster which is priced at £908 though.

I reckon bus fare increase across the country is more or less related to the permitted average train fare rise formula of RPI+1% that's introduced by the Labour Government and is still in force.

For the coming new year 5.9% is the figure generated from the RPI+1% formula.

Bus operators seem to be trying to increase fare at the rate that's a little bit smaller than train's, but is at least more than inflation.

I can think of these 2 eg.

First Sheffield Day ticket

01/2009--01/2012 £4.00->£4.60 (5% per year in average)

National Express West Midlands (B'ham's main operator)

01/2009--01/2012 £3.30->£3.60 (3% per year in average)

The RPI+1% formula from the government clearly gives a message that train fares in this country have to be increasing faster than inflation. For other sorts of public transport if their fare rise is unregulated, are perhaps likely to follow the rate used by trains.

No definitely not!

All bus+train through tickets or passes are issued on behalf of the public sector (eg SYPTE) rather than any private operators!

Why not do away with all the free bus passes (except for OAPS) and then simply charge a flat rate of 80p to use the bus.

Everyone then pays

Free bus passes only came back in the other year. Fares weren't reduced before that and I don't expect them to be again. People are not subsidising free travel for the elderly.

Just proves a point why Stagecoach is taking business from under First's noses!

Example of how cheap Stagecoach is compared to First:

Woodseats - City

First (current price) £1.95

Stagecoach (current price) - £1.50

From 2/01/12

First £2.10

Stagecoach £1.50

60p difference each way!

Presumably though Stagecoach will stick 10p/20p around March time.....

For now! I remember watching a programme about Stagecoach on TV a few years ago. Their tactic in new areas is to undercut local companies until they go out of business and then to hike fairs to unbelievable levels once the competition has been crushed.

Would Stagecoach ever do a thing like that? Obviously not with them being perfect!
