Has this made any of the national newspapers? If not, it bloody well should have! It's not as if this country has many world champions in any sport, let alone kickboxing. I'm also surprised that a lot of the kickboxing enthusiasts who regularly post on here haven't offered their congratulations.

This country has countless world champions under different sanctioning bodies.

Some are reputable and have a long history behind them while others are just "Association titles" as some of these titles are just granted/awarded by someone who happens to have started their own martial arts association.

Just as a guideline, the main governing bodies are:

ISKA = International Sport Kickboxing Association.

ISKA started in the USA at the time of the collapse of the original body the PKA went defunct.

ISKA is now the leading body for Kickboxing in the U.K.

Not all promoters will use ISKA for sanctioning Titles as theyre requirment for each title level are very stringent.

Promoters wishing to fast track someone who is AREA title level for a "British" title fight will often find their proposals refused.

I know of a promoter who let someone who had a record of 0 wins and 2 losses fight for a title. They were going to use the ISKA but that would not have been accepted under ISKA.

WKA= World Kickboxing Association.

WKA started off in the USA as a rival body to the PKA.

The WKA was used in the UK and Europe for decades. WKA is still big in Europe but association politics and "splinter groups" have hampered the WKA's progress and they do not have as much prescence in certain parts of the country.

W.A.K.O = World Association of Kickboxing Organisations .

WAKO started off in Europe.

To my knowledge it started off in Germany but is now governed by an Italian called Ernie Falsioni (might be out of date but thats who ran it last i heard of).

WAKO are best known for their activity in Amateur kickboxing and Sport Karate.

WAKO's Amateur championships are known to be the biggest Amateur Circuit in the world often known as a Martial Arts Olympiad.

WAKO also have a Professional arm known as WAKO-PRO. Admittedly , WAKO's PRO division is not as active as their Amateur circuit.

IKF= International Kickboxing Federation.

IKF is a relatively new Sanctioning Body. Again like the ISKA and WKA they are USA based.

IKF are well known for its extra strict safety standards for example, they were the first to INSIST on a clear Amateur-PRO Divide. They dont allow Amateur competitors to compete without a Headguard! They also insist that any KO as opposed to a TKO leads to a 45 day medical suspension as opposed to a 28 or 30 day suspension like most other bodies.

I hope this helps,... if you have anymore questions please ask and I can tell you which body specialises in which Discipline

Hey, this isn't anything personal! I wouldn't know Joe McGovern if he walked through my font door. I don't know anyone else who knows him or anyone who is connected to him. All I would say is 'well done!' Sheffield has a World Champion. Only one question: Would you congratulate him?

Ha ha you'd know Joe if you saw him. Big lad!!! About 6'4" or possibly 6'5" !

Also very powerful. Has KO power in both his punches and his lethal knee strikes.

But seriously id congratulate ANY fighter for winning a Fight be it for a title or not.

Kickboxers dont get enough recognition PERIOD. Even an AREA champion in Boxing would get more media coverage than a multiple world champion in kickboxing.

Sad But True
