heavenlyarts Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Today in the star there is a headline "Hero Jim saves dying player" http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/hero_jim_saves_dying_player_1_4045100 Now it's wonderful what this guy did but, is he really a Hero? The dictionary defines Hero as :- 1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. 2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act In my opinion Hero is used too frequently for acts though altruistic that are not heroic.
mj.scuba Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Isn't the ability to save somebody's life a distinguished ability?
Norbert Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Good to know we can still use the word in everyday life. I thought the armed forces had a monopoly on it.
ampersand Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 the answer to the poll question has to be yes, but not in the case of the story linked
Bobgok23 Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 How many cowards, both moral and physical are there? We need more heroes both physical and moral. I'm sure that makes sense?
Supertramp Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Yes, get rid of the Bourneville. No one likes that one.
Cyclone Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Isn't the ability to save somebody's life a distinguished ability? That depends doesn't it, a large proportion of adults have some first aid training, does using it successfully make you a hero?
Bobgok23 Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 That depends doesn't it, a large proportion of adults have some first aid training, does using it successfully make you a hero? Yes of course it could.
Cyclone Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I disagree, I think that reduces the value of the word, I don't think that distinguished ability is to do something that many other people can do.

I would class someone who has saved a life a hero, by the definitions above.
