What year did the old monochrome Nintendo Gameboy come out?

It was one of those "Guess the year" questions on the quiz in the Crown and Glove last night, I remembered the original Gameboy coming out in the late 80s, specifcally 1989, but they said the answer was 1990!

 

I wanted to query the answer, but Dad said no.

 

Anyone know the year?
