Ideas for a retail-free Christmas

It kind of cropped up in another thread...

If you decided to have a retail-free Christmas, or at least to opt out of the whole 'avarice' based fiasco we no longer associate with anything remotely religious (pagan OR Christian), what are the important bits you'd keep in, or what would you do instead?

If you're going to 'bah-humbug', at least do it with humour ;)

Yes, forget the expensive gifts, still have the Christmas dinner and family round, get the TV on in the afternoon and sit watching it while stuffing your face with choccies.

O, and don't forget the goodwill to your fellow man and women - afterwards you can return to normality:hihi:

well that was a short lived thread

Maybe everyone was busy doing their Xmas shopping. ;)

The idea of meeting up with your loved ones in the shortest/darkest days of the year and having a party to cheer everyone up is the fundamental thing that's attractive about a mid winter feast. That always has and always will be the case regardless of past, present or future religious or non-religious affiliations.

So the bits to keep are visiting family and friends, and the food and drink.

I liked the idea which cropped up a few years ago, where a family member who had lost their job gave vouchers for favours to be cashed in later in the year, like for an evening's babysitting, or an afternoon's gardening

We'll probably have Xmas dinner (can't go without a sprout!) and Xmas pudding but no presents or deccies (I loathe fake trees but can't be buying a real one this year).

I have made mince pies already with mincemeat I made last year, they were super-nom :D
