Falkland Islands Tension increase

Recommended Posts

I am asking you, as you seem so sure that the current defences aren't capable of repelling an invasion.

Really, just simply row across in dingies? :)

The Argees would never dream of another invasion of the Falklands we learnt from our mistakes and we have a strong presence round the area and the Falklands is now a regular barracks the only way they could get soldiers on the island is by parachute landing and I don't think they would be daft enough to try that.

I assume you're trying to be clever though since it's pretty much a rhetorical question.

There are 2 possible answers I suppose, but flying them across would clearly be suicide, unless the first flight was in order to seize the airbase, I doubt they could manage that with a single flight though... They could probably cause some damage though.

(This is assuming that our rules of engagement don't allow us to shoot down transport aircraft that haven't yet done anything except breach airspace).

By sea would be the obvious route though, they've have to expect to take heavy losses since we have a sub in the area, again assuming that it was authorised to take pre-emptive action... If not then the sub wouldn't help.

So, do you think any Argentine government would try a suicide mission?

I take it you haven't heard about the Argentineans new teleportation devise.:D

Maybe they could row in shifts and so only 1 of them would be knackered when they arrived.

Suppose they could get penguins to tow their dingies into battle :)

We would probably notice a couple of thousand people rowing towards the islands, but assuming we didn’t they would then have to get to and take Mount Pleasant without being noticed.

By "invading" do you mean hostile Argentinian troops setting foot in numbers on the Falklands, or something less than that?

Fair point.

For the purposes of the bet "invading" would mean attempting to take the islands by force of arms (large or small) or any action resulting in armed conflict between recognised, uniformed, British and Argentine combatants on the Falkland Islands or within their territorial waters.

If I were a rich man, I'd offer odds of 1000000:1 on the reverse bet. I could maybe offer 2500:1 for a single £1 stake - but I'm not going to, on the grounds that there's nothing in it for me.

Do we really want another bloody silly pointless war?

If the stupid chuffs want to live in the back of beyond, lets settle them somewhere in the middle of Yorkshire, that no one gives a damn about.

Sheffield for example.;)

And in some fashion, addressing a forieign embassy would make the buffoon pink cheeked PM of England see some modicum of sense would it?

It's nice that you've got such a high level of confidence in our troops, they are well trained and equipped, but numbers count for a lot, and 500 (even if they were all infantry and not support) isn't really that many.

Our soldiers are like walking armies in thier own right the amount of firepower they can bring to bare. The RAF are amonst the best pilots in the world and currently have the best fighter in the world.

We also have some of the most advanced subs that are most likely already there watching the Argies get red faced a puffy chested.

Let's be serious about this.

Aside from the resident infantry company down there, the majority of the Mount Pleasant personnell are technical and administrative specialists not in formed fighting units. They have allocated weapons that can be issued, but they are not equipped to go out into a battelfield. Last ditch defence of the base is all they could be used for and, like it or not, many of the RAF and RN ground personnel have bugger all training or experience in fighting. Don't forget MPA is an airbase, with mostly RAF personnel.

I'm not saying that the Argentinians could get past the RN at sea or make a successful attack by air, but the islands are hardly teeming with steely-eyed British killers.

Add to that the fact that they didn’t sneak up on us last time, we knew it was going to happen, the governor of the islands was warned several days before the Argentinean invasion took place, we just could do anything to assist them from the UK, this time we can. The bottom line is that it will be easier and cheaper to defend the Falkland’s than take them back again.

We had plenty of training, we were better shots and generally more inelegant hence the reason we could do both jobs equally well.
