Suicide - is it a viable 'way out'?

Most people have not considered child molesting but would not do it or condone anyone else doing it. You do not need to be in the molestor's circumstance to know this - it is just wrong!

So is murder, assault, theft, etc ... we do not need to be in the mind of the criminal before we can say this is wrong.

Suicide is no different. I do not need to experience a certain mindset to know it is a crime. The only people who deserve our sympathies are the victims of this selfish crime, ie the family and friends of those they cruelly leave behind.

how on earth can you say that suicide is a crime? Is it a crime to suffer from a mental illness that can drag you to the darkest depths of the human mind. am i commiting a crime as i take my anti depressants?. Of course the familes and friends of people who have been driven to suicide deserve sympathy, but if you are ever unfortunate enough to find yourself in a situation where you feel that sucide is the only way out, unfortunately family and friends are far from your thoughts.

maybe if there wasn't such a stigma attached to mental health issues more people would seek help rather than suffer in silence.

But how can i expect any understanding, tolerance or empathy from some who's screen name is 'Sir Enoch'

Hi CC, thanks I think I will. Although I don't believe in zombie-ing through life on tabs just to stop me having dark thoughts?

I don't know why my PM's didn't work though, the settings are ok as far as I can tell.

The tablets youu GP will offer for short term will not "zombie you out" they will just help until you feel ready to talk about the underlying problem and they are also not addictive, please just try them to get over the Christmas period.

My daughter has a degenerative terminal disease and she won't commit suicide.

I am sorry to hear that but as MissyMoo says it is a personal choice and none of us know what we would do unless we were in that situation.

The Suicide Act 1961 Decriminalised the act of suicide.

Compare the situation in hospital where a patient has asked for a 'do not resuscitate order' compared to 'assisting suicide', which is illegal. So it begs the question 'who owns your life?'

I can say suicide is a crime because it is!

As for the dig about my name ... people in glasshouses, Mr Crapper, people in glasshouses!

Suicide is not a crime - The Suicide Act 1961 says:-

1 Suicide to cease to be a crime.

The rule of law whereby it is a crime for a person to commit suicide is hereby abrogated

However, that Act introduced the crime of assisting someone to commit suicide - so if you attempted suicide but failed, you cannot be prosecuted, but someone who assisted you, in theory, could

I know from personal experience that there are so many different opinions and causal reasons regarding this ultimate act, but for some people, rich/poor and famous or not, it seems to be the way 'out'?

Some say those that commit suicide are selfish (bereaved loved ones)? Mentally/emotionally ill? Desperate? There are spiritual questions involved - is it a leap into eternal nothingness or judgement by their God/s? Some religions see suicide as a sin.

Personally, where kids aren't involved, I can't blame those that do it. Doesn't make it acceptable, but I don't disagree with the concept, so much of this life is unpalatable.

The English actor George Sanders committed suicide in 1972 aged 66, he had told his disbelieving friend David Niven in 1937 that he would do it one day. His note read-

"Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck."

As we're predominantly now a secular nation in practice and outlook, is suicide 'wrong'?

You would find out if it was right or wrong when you enter the next world. It might just be that The Man might not look too kindly upon those who do the Hari-Kari bit. :D

How could you consider it to be anything other than selfish? No one commits suicide for someone else's benefit!

You my friend are so wrong.....what if the person who commits suicide has suffered from depresion for so long and gradually got worse to the point that they think their nearest and dearest (who has done everything for them for years) is on the verge of going under because of the illness....what if they see it as the only option so that dosnt happen...ide call that for someone elses benefit wouldnt you?.... selfish I think not.
