theripsaw Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Has anybody witnessed one of the promised extra carriages due to be introduced in December? I havent yet.. the Leeds/Sheffield train is still overcrowded at peak times
dosxuk Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 1) The new timetables don't kick in till the 12th 2) Northern have gained 50 carriages, but lost 23, meaning there's only really 27 additions, and they're based in Manchester, so while there may be the odd extra nodding donkey, it's not going to make much difference to this side of the Pennines.

dosxuk Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I wasnt aware of new timetables? There are new timetables across Europe every December, with an update every June. That doesn't mean every service changes though, far from it. I wonder which scrap yard they dug these 'new' carriages out of... Birmingham, who just got some actual new trains rather than cascaded ones, and the south west, who also got Birmingham's cast offs.
222Meridian Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 The following info. are sourced from Northern Railway Forum posted by some trainspotters very shortly before. Northern is gonna fill the 2-hour gap of Hope Valley Stopping Service between 1714 and 1914 with a new 1814 service from Sheffield to Piccadily. The are between 15-20 additional diesel units to Northern's fleet. 7 units are pacers from First Great Western in South West, 1 of which is designated for the North East Region, and the other 6 are is basically for Merseyside. 8 units are class 150 sprinters from London Midland in Birmingham. 1 of which is definitely serving Sheffield, as the new 1814 from Sheffield to Piccadily service mentioned above would require an extra rolling stock. The other 7 are probably for any services solely/partially serving the GMPTE. Northern has mentioned in the press release that the 2 spare diesel trains (replaced by cascade of electric trains from Scotland) are gonna be used in Leeds--Bradford--Manchester area services. It might be true that apart from Sheffield--Dore--Manchester (Hope Valley Stopping Service), other Northern services in S.Yorks are getting nothing!
2101 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I wasnt aware of new timetables? I wonder which scrap yard they dug these 'new' carriages out of... They're not that old and clapped out. The Sprinter class 158s are good trains which are normally found on the Sheffield - Leeds fast.
Hook Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 They're not that old and clapped out. The Sprinter class 158s are good trains which are normally found on the Sheffield - Leeds fast. Pacers certainly are old and clapped out though.
222Meridian Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 A gentleman (who I think he's a Northern Rail driver!) posted on Northern Railway Forum this evening saying the following class 142 pacer services are gonna be coupled! 0539 Sheffield-Lincoln, 0704 Lincoln-Sheffield, 0844 Sheffield-Lincoln, 1025 Lincoln-Adwick, 1313 Adwick-Sheffield, 1424 Sheffield-Scunthorpe, 1619 Scunthorpe-Lincoln, 1943 Lincoln-Sheffield. 0618 Sheffield-Adwick, 0729 Adwick-Sheffield, 0824 Sheffield-Scunthorpe, 1019 Scunthorpe-Lincoln, 1325 Lincoln-Adwick, 1615 Adwick-Retford, 1814 Retford-Doncaster, 2003 Doncaster-Worksop, 2126 Worksop-Sheffield, 2244 Sheffield-Worksop, 2328 Worksop-Sheffield. Next Monday we can see if he's right! A coupled pacer has at least 204 seats
BHRemovals Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 people will still be standing is the sad fact
tbtc Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Bear in mind that most of the Liverpool - Manchester - Sheffield - Nottingham trains are going to be doubled in length to four coaches, a big improvements on one of the busiest services.
