hayleys Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 I've applied for law at university, can anyone help on how i can get a head start on the subject?
fruitisbad Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Maybe see if you can get hold of a reading list for one of the courses?
Guest Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 I do wish people wouldn't start these sorts of threads when they're only doing so to get their post count up sufficient to send a PM or to post something in the classifieds. By the time folk have considered a helpful response, the OP has generally sent their PM or posted their ad and won't be seen again. The requirement is five posts, not five threads, by the way.
jaffacake Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Find out which "legal subjects" you will be studying ie tort law, contract law, land law etc and if you can get hold of a reading list then you can get a head start on the reading, or if not there are loads of law textbooks on amazon and ebay, try to get hold of a recent one, and read those. Just make sure the books are fairly recent a the law does change and you dont want to be learning stuff that is out of date. Good luck learning law is very hard, but can also be very interesting (and conversely very boring).
hayleys Posted December 3, 2011 Author Posted December 3, 2011 You don't need to comment if it's nothing constructive or helpful, thankyou. How would i get a hold of a reading list ? I'm looking at a book called 'the english legal system' by slapper and kelly. do you know if that book is worth reading?

Yes,Slapper is a reknowned family in legal circles, and at one time law was dominated in many smaller towns by a firm of Slappers.I cant comment on Kelly however but they were famous for their directories.I would also suggest one of the autobiographies of famous Judges, and can heartliy recommend Pickles,Denning, and Cowell.
Womerry2 Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Look at your Law department's website. Make sure you read a range of papers (online is cheaper) every day. If you really feel you need help, consider something like this introduction to legal studies: http://www.derby.ac.uk/law/legalstudies Steer clear of Pickles (extreme sentencing) and Denning (wilful misinterpretation). They will not help at all. Consider Cowell only if you wish to appear on x-factor. Be aware that the people who might be able to give helpful information on this topic will (quite rightly) assume that you should, as a law student, be doing your own basic research, so you are leaving yourself wide open to snarky (but funny) responses.

I was refering to Joshua Cowell,a practicioner in the Georgian era. What I pray is this X-factor-is it a reference to nobbling witnesses?
