Jobs to be lost at Sheffield's recycling centres

Recommended Posts

Well, for a start, landfill tax is fifty odd quid a tonne to your kindly twenty quid waste remover.

Obviously a dark country lane doesn't attract Landfill Tax.

The lad who moved mine put it in his landrover ,so he could get into the tip .

As a frequent visitor to the recycling centres and speaking to some of the guys who work there it seems the new contractor has misled the council by promising better recycling rates with fewer staff and vastly reduced working hours. How can this be possible. Also i can use my bin to dispose of small items but need the tip for larger items that wont fit in my bin. I say keep the sites open seven days a week.

The dump it sites worked perfectly well until the council subbed them out to Veolia. Now all they are concerned about is re-cyling as much rubbish as poss .and making as much cash as possible.

before it was subbed out ,lads in large vans could empty in the tips, the lads wotking hteir turned a blind eye for a "Drink" ,and everyone was happy......... NO FLY TIPPING. Now the vnas are banned ,there is fly tipping galore ,the lads in the tip miss out on their "Drink", and the whole policy smacks of stupidity.

There is an old saying "If something isnt broken ,dont mend it ".

At the end of the day the council tell Veolia what to do even tho Veolia might be responsable for the sites upkeep, Veolia do what the council tell them to do as they are under contract, its the council that is responsable to keep waste landfill to a minimum and recyling to a maximum. Sheffield council instigated the no van policy, much the same as Rotherham council brought the no van policy in aswell. So you can't blame Veolia for doing what they are instructed to carry out.

No your not. Their is NO signage on any council tip saying FOR USE BY SHEFFIELD RESIDENTS ONLY.

Irespective of signage or not I once tried to unload some rubbish at the Beighton site as i live about a mile from it, they asked my postcode and because it was just outside the Sheffield boundry they refused me entry to the site.

Legislation is developing all the time. What was reasonable for waste disposal in 1990 isn't today. Have a look at the legislation businesses have to contend with: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/netregs/legislation/current/63614.aspx

The council will accept small amounts of general waste from private citizens, but like all other councils is insisting on specialist registered waste disposal companies to look after trade waste of any sort.

It has been said by one contributor that they visit daily. I cannot reconcile that with any reasonable quantity of domestic waste, even allowing for large families with highly wasteful lifestyles, and disabled neighbours! House improvements can produce quite a lot, but not every week, surely.

The value of reclaimed materials is vastly outweighed by the costs of disposal by the council, or its sub-contractors. A line has to be drawn somewhere and the regulations in Sheffield are broadly the same as in Barnsley or Brighton - for a reason. If they weren't businesses would be bringing large amounts of commercial waste which would cost the councils a lot to process, even without complying with the legislative record keeping. Domestic waste disposal is subsidised by council tax income, but that doesn't cover trade waste.

Private citizens are allowed to dump all sorts of materials with minimal record keeping. Trade waste has to be carefully recorded - it really is onerous, so it's quite understandable that so much is fly tipped. Understandable, but not excusable. This is very much a national issue, see; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2070137/Rogue-fly-tipper-Wayne-Richards-dumped-100-TONS-junk-jailed.html

As the service costs the council, it's no surprise that it's not available to non-residents of that area.

What individual employees do or don't do in enforcing the regulations of their employer is a matter for them and their employer. It sounds as though some contributors have been very lucky in getting their waste accepted where it really shouldn't if the regulations had been strictly applied. I've always found the staff most helpful whenever I've called with a car full.

Cutting opening hours at dump it sites really is the most stupid decision.

Quite apart from causing inconvenience to people trying to get rid of waste (much of which is recycled) it will only encourage fly tipping*, so it won`t even save any money. It might even, on balance, cost money !

* I don`t want to make any excuses for fly tippers, in my opinion they`re the scum of the earth, only one up from burglars in fact, but the fact is people do fly tip, and more will do so if it`s harder to legitimately dump waste.

At present disposing of waste is simple and flytipping exists. It's the cost and not the opening hours that are causing the problem. There's money to be made from the disposal of waste material and unfortunately there are companies that are willing to break the rules.

There was a programme on a while back about an illegal dump site. The area was rich in wildlife. It was bought under false pretences and fenced off. Cut a long story short, the area is now dead and will be for years to come on account of the waste that was left there. So much was dropped by so many firms seeking to save on the cost that in the end overhead cables on telegraph poles were just over head height.

We have already paid for the facility through council tax, so leave the opening times as they are inho.

As for reductions in staff levels, well there seems to be a lot of "hanging around doing nothing" when I go, even at the really busy times.

However, a quick poll with my workmates suggests no-one would mind paying a pound per visit to keep it open full time.

Correct ,we have ,but not every council tax payer has the benefits of being able to use the tips. Some people are paying for a facility they are barred from using. Hence the vast amount of fly tipping.
