croftee Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 What help is out there to get our young people into employment, training or further education, I have read that 1 in 5 16-24 year olds are now looking for work but there appears to be little help or support, anyone know of any sites that offer jobs, support that aren't there purely to increase the databases of recruitment companies. Cheers
Resident Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Why is there this emphasis on 16-24 yr olds ? What happens at 25? Are you considered 'on the scrap-heap'? Unemployment figures, according to the BBC at the middle of Nov 2011 was at 2.62 million, with 16-24 yr olds accounting for 1.16 million of that figure which is a shade over 44% and whilst I agree that it's a figure to be concerned about, what about the other 56%, those that are over 24? Do they not deserve the same support and help purely because they fall out of the 'youth' category ?
croftee Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Appreiate your comments and agree totally I am asking the question for my 19 year old daughter.
AlyJ Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Unfortunately this current government have taken it upon themselves to take away the careers services which have always been there to offers help to young people, and in Sheffield, adults into work and training. It seems to be fair game to moan at these public services but they provided a great support service to help young people to make sense of the possibilities around them and prepare for the world of work. Careers and Connexions services across the whole country have been decimated because of cuts and there is little hope of getting them back. These were highly qualified people who are now on the scrap heap. The few that are left have a commitment to the young people they work with, but with minimal resources and increased need, they are likely to fold under the pressure of not being able to really help. Sorry for the moaning session......
Paul2412 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 What happened to going to the job centre or recruitment agencies to find work?

Cheers I completely agree with you croftee. The most important part of anyones life is their adolescence. If we dont train them at that time, we have lost them. A young man, needs the association with grown men, to teach him to be a man. In his work, as well as in his life.

What about 25-60 year olds ? - are they going to be sent on training and work placements until they retire ? And all for a pittance of a 'wage' ?
