jimmyt101 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Hi I am thinking of getting the below lens as a Christmas present and wondered if anyone out there knew of any similar alternatives before I put down my cash. Its for my canon eos 500d. http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/12878/show.html Thanks in advance.

Delayed Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I have this same lens and it is fantastic for the price. It produces lovely bokeh and is perfect for portrait photography. It is also useful for Night Photography due to the aperture size. I'm still learning how to use it myself but I suggest looking on FlickR under this lens for an example of the photos that it can take. Well worth it.
Firparnian Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 The nifty fifty, probably the best value lens in the Canon range.
CompServs Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Worth every penny. Unless you're willing to spend upwards of £300 you're not going to find anything significantly better. You won't regret it
astraman Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 My list of recommended alternatives was accurate after all!! There is no other lens to compare with it for quality and value.

Out of interest and being a total novice, what kind of photo's would you take with that lens?
chriscalcite Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Out of interest and being a total novice, what kind of photo's would you take with that lens? One of the many things it'll be excellent at on a cropped-sensor dslr will be tight portraits in low or natural light. The fast aperture means the depth of field is very shallow with the lens wide open - you can easily throw the background out of focus and isolate your subject. It's also extremely well-corrected (little or no distortion) which works well with portraits and (as someone else commented) the bokeh (out of focus highlights) are very pleasing. I have a slightly faster 50mm f/1.4 and it's a brilliant little lens.
Bruno Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Thanks for that info, for the price it looks a good buy.
