No real signing to me , she just pulled a few faces like 'I don't understand you'. She also patted me on the arm when I started to sign up but ,at least she didn't shout at me when I walked away.

She wouldn't have understood you, you weren't speaking Romanian.

Deaf an dumb people are usually able to sign, was there any form of signing going on.

That's true, and this sound like a scam, but there isn't much point in deaf folk signing at hearing folk who can't read BSL!

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that deaf people who don't speak don't describe themselves as 'dumb' these days.

True. It's usually described in deaf circles as 'deaf without speech'.

They wouldnt use BSL but they would still sign in some way a bit like we would speak pidgin English to a foreigner, I cant imagine them just shoving a board in front of someone.

I was approached by a youngish girl (~20_) with a clipboard claiming she was deaf /dumb and collecting for a Children's Hospital. I nearly signed up but realised it was probably a scam. did anyone else see her? She looked vaguely Spanish.

Really ? - and what made you think that ?

Perhaps the hospital is to be in Romania (or Spain)?

We really do have to be ever vigilant these days. If it is not someone in the street, it is on the phone, or email, or post.

Well it looks as if no-one on here was approached except me ! As a follow up,I saw her again later on the Saturday with a friend going down towards the station. She saw me and speeded up ; probably catching a train back to wherever.

Call the PC brigade! Dumb actually means not having the capacity to speak. It just gets taken out of context these days like a lot of other sayings.
