My mum and her friends used to buy their selves a bit of (perhaps juicy) gossip time by sending their toddler offspring to ‘go up t’ gas lamp and see if I’m there, if I’m not come back an tell me’- and we did it!

When it's raining heavy and the rain is coming straight down,

my Mother would say,

It's raining stir rod's.

We still say that now but we say stair rods. I assume it's because stair rods are those long straight bars that were used on stair carpets. My dad also used to say ' it's black 'ore Bills mother's' . We thought Bill was someone dad worked with.

I was told it was in reference to Kaiser Wilhelm  Of Germany during the first world war. Him being a relative of Queen Victoria.

Whenever I asked my dad what he was doing, he'd always say 'Keeping t'sun out o' me eyes.'

I've never heard anybody else use the expression.
