hi all some one is trying to sell my a copied version of windows 7 ultimate is it legal if i buy it? (no stupid answers please its only a question) cheers

If you bought it under the impression it was a proper copy, then you should be ok if you don't tell anyone. (Although I'm not sure)

Personally I think the person trying to sell it you is a tight get and they should lend it you for free!

he says it does not require a product key and that its does not need activating

but trying to get a straight answer out of google is like trying to get blood from a stone lol

In which case it's illegal

I have the same version bought OEM at currys (on sale to) and it required a product key.

Your best bet is to try amazon or somewhere like that this week as a lot of them are having early black Friday sales

No it's not legal, you have to purchase the proper version, it does not need a key because more than likely it's a 'cracked' copy. After a while what could happen when you do connect to the internet is a window popping up saying something like 'this version/copy of windows is non genuine'.

It is legal to sell it, but it doesn't sound legal in the circumstances you describe.

Though some manufacturers claim it is illegal to sell it on at all.

True but if it doesn't require a liscence key to install there is no doubt the copy is illegal

How can it be legal to sell if it is a non genuine copy? (which i suspect it is)

Not quite.

The pre-activated Windows 7 copy is designed for machines from Acer, Advent, Alienware, Asus, Benq, Compaq, Dell, Founder, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, Haier, Hasee, HCL, HP, Jooyon, Lenovo, LG, Medion, MSI, NEC, Nokia, Quanmax, Samsung, Sony, Tongfang, Toshiba, Trigem and Viliv.

OEMs don’t need to go through the normal activation process of new Windows 7 installation, as end users do.

Instead they can leverage what the software giant refers to as OEM Activation 2.1, a mechanism which helps computer manufactures activate the copies of Windows 7 they pre-install on new machines.

It appears that hackers managed to crack this mechanism for computers coming from no less than 28 OEMs.
