Low Frequency Vibration/Humming in The House

Recommended Posts

Only recently iv started to hear a noise that sounds like a washing machine at night, usually about half 12 so I'm guessing it wont be my next door neighbours as they have a young child. The noise only last a couple of minutes but is really loud, more loud when my head is on the pillow which makes me think it is a vibration from the ground. after a couple of minutes the sound slows down, like a washing machine would after a spin. Very unusual!

Before anyone says anything its deffo not my house or in my head, any suggestions as to what the noise could be?

Thanks

Does anyone else in your household hear this noise? If not, then it may be that you are particularly sensitive to the noise and can hear it at a frequency that others can't - or - it may be the noise is within your own head.

I used to have a house near to an electricity sub-station (not some big plant - one of those little green boxes that you see all around the place) and I would be able to hear the vibrations from that at night. But that was constant - at least until I fell asleep.

What you are describing though is a temporary noise. Which is rather more intriguing. It suggests something is starting up or slowing down around that time. Obvious things would be anything on a timer for example that cuts in or out on a programme - assuming you hear it every night. The central heating is a good shout but check the programme timings.

There are of course other, more supernatural possibilities, but I wouldn't wish to scare you!:)

It could be something to do with your inner ear. Sometimes, if I hold my head in a certain position, I can hear a humming sound that sounds like it exists in the physical world. However, it disappears and reappears according to head angle.

Sometimes if I hold my head in a certain direction I get a terrible monotonous droning sound in my ear.

It's the wife! :hihi:

Don't you have time to do this during the day? I wouldn't appreciate a neighbour who puts the washing machine on in the evenings - especially at bedtime. Why would you want to do that?

I do have a genuine reason. My baby girl lost a large section ot her bowel to a terrible illness aged 2 weeks. It has left her with short bowel syndrome which unfortunately leads to two or three soiled outfits per day. I just don't like leaving them overnight so bundle them up when she's gone to bed.

As I said we are detached so realistically there is only one neighbour which could possibly hear it and as were on friendly terms with him I wouldve expected him to tell us if it was disturbing him.

Heh heh! Is that the not-towards-the-telly direction? I get that too.

Possibly a central heating pump firing up for a quick burst when the boiler gets too warm shortly after the system shuts off at night.

Another possibility is an extractor fan. We have them in bathroom, kitchen and toilet, facing outwards on 3 walls. Some modern houses can have them in 3 or 4 en suite bathrooms! They usually have a timer that' can be set from as little as a minute to 30 minutes after the light is turned off in the room. 2 minutes would make that quite likely - either in your house, or the neighbours.

We've had several different fans over the years and some have been much noisier than others. Curiously they can be noisier outside the room than within it, and one in particular transmitted a resonance throughout the house.

I'd rule out poltergeists and all things paranormal - and probably medical conditions, too!

good answer - fully understandable. Get yourself a Bosch washing machine though love when you next change it. They are brilliant! Almost silent.

Washing during the day wakes people who work nights up.

To get the washing clean. Our washer is on the go as I type this, and so is the dishwasher as it happens.

Angel.

Is this the same sound I`ve been hearing (mainly at night) for a few months now ?

I wouldn`t say it`s like a hum though, it`s more like really low notes from a church organ playing. I`ve tried switching everything off one by one in our house, the central heating (not that it`s on at the moment anyway), the fridge, the freezer etc etc, but it`s still present.

I live in North Sheffield.
