Bell just OK - Trip 'hit and miss'? Well... Don't get me wrong, some nice real ale pubs in Sheffield, but there is nowt wrong with the Nottingham ones... What about the three brewers one, near broadmarsh? Clayton, Morton and Fellows, or some such! That was brewing onsite before real ale was fashionable...

I went to the Clayton last year when I stayed over just before Christmas.....I wasn't impressed...I'd take Dev Cat, Sheffield Tap and Kelham Island Tavern over any of the real ale pubs I've been to in Nottingham....and I've been to plenty of them before/after hockey.

The Trip is a decent pub, but they don't always have the type of beer on that I like. I usually go to the Trip to finish off our boozy day at the Ice Hockey play-offs, because I usually stay at the Rutland Square Hotel which is nearby......It's old, but that doesn't make the beer better. :hihi:

My favourite pub in Nottingham is actually the Wetherspoons next to the canal (Company Inn).

I do like the Red Hot Buffet in Nottingham and wish we had one here in Sheffield, although it's now caught on with the hockey supporters so I've not been able to get in the last few times I've been.

For me Nottingham is just another big city like Sheffield, in some areas it's superior and in others it's inferior.....Of course we all know who has the better ice hockey team. :D

Nottingham has a much better range of real ale pubs then Sheffield! And its camra magazine puts the sheffield one to shame.

Lot more breweries in and around nottingham to:)

Overall nottingham is a nicer city. Sheffield just has better countryside on the doorstep.

Well I hope somebody tells me where they are, because I've checked Beers In The Evening to find the higher rated ones and I've generally been disappointed when I've been

I'm hoping to give Derby a go sometime in the new year, because I'm told that does have real ale pubs to rival Sheffield.

It's at times like these I'm reminded of the words of a famous poet...

Cause if there's a chance

We might've missed

And if there's a ray of light in this

Baby you should know that this is where my heart takes over.

That sounds just like me......I prefer the big high street chains.

Also regarding the bars, I drink in Nottingham a few times a year and find that Sheffield offers me more of what I like.....Real Ale Pubs.

Sheffield is good for real ale pubs I grant you that.

Try the Vat and Fiddle near the railway station, or the Olde Trip to Jerusalem embedded in the castle walls, or Fellow Morton and Clayton and the Canal house, on Canal street, or the Bell Inn in market square, or the Lincolnshire Poacher on Mansfield Road.

BTW - "Beer in the evening" isn't a very good site actually - not very accurate or objective.

all the same for a local paper to put the ad on the front page for nottingham, it not fair on the local shops that pay to go in the star with adverts

Anyone can advertise wherever they like.

There would be no point in advertising though if you didn't have a realistic chance of attracting custom with your advert.

But obviously Nottingham have cottoned on to the fact that Sheffield is a very disappointing city in terms of its shopping and they feel that they are close enough to win over some disillusioned shoppers from here. After all, it's only 35 minutes down the road by car. It takes me that to get into Sheffield and park sometimes - and for what? To see the boarded up shops and charity beggars.

I agree that Sheffield lost its shopping heart when Meadowhall was built. Since then there has been the prospect of the Sevenstone project only to find it shelved due to the credit crunch of 2008. They now propose a scaled down version which will diminish the impact.

Whether Sheffield will ever recover for a day out shopping only time and money will tell. The Castle Market needs to come down and the Moor needs modernising. We need specialist shops too, but as for going to Nottingham ... no. There's more to shopping than going out looking at goodies. I want to eat, have a coffee and I found Nottingham lacking in these and a bit dirty and run down. I have lived in Liverpool and that is a great experience, if only for the day, especially now Liverpool One is open. Manchester offers a great deal too for a day out. As for Leeds I was disappointed after all the hype.

As a Sheffielder I am disappointed that the problem of our city centre has not been resolved long before now and I am not sure it ever will. The other core cities are so far ahead of us it will take a visionary to transform the shopping and day out experience.

That's my 4 penneth worth
