Meadowhall is awful - full of tat, chain stores and smelly, mucky people, where their odour seems to just recycle around the building - :gag:

Wrong

tell you what mate...

if all you are looking for are the big high street chain stores, like Boots, M&S, WH Smith, Waterstones, Costa Coffee, GAME, Debenhams, House of Fraser, blah blah blah then you are spot on. You can get all that in Meadowhall - no need to venture further. And you wouldn't appreciate Nottingham or Manchester for that matter.

Not picking on you mate - or anyone else for that matter. Look, it's quite simple, if you enjoy going to a place that has a big range of shops, loads of independent shops as well where you can buy things you'd never see in this city, if you like a great choice of bars and restaurants as well to complete the experience, then Nottingham, and even more so, Manchester, beat this big village hands down.

That sounds just like me......I prefer the big high street chains.

Also regarding the bars, I drink in Nottingham a few times a year and find that Sheffield offers me more of what I like.....Real Ale Pubs.

It's got to suit someone, hasn't it? I guess if Sheffield offers what those from Sheffield want, those who are not from Sheffield shall have to just wander out and about to find our shops! Can't believe you say that you were a student in Nottingham though, and yet think there's no real ale there! What about Castle Rock? Probably a few others since I last looked... The Bell is a institution, aside from Kids, Sally and obviously, the trip...

Headlines like these really don't help the state of local shopping.

Please help your local businesses in these tough times, especially the small independent traders that rely on local custom and passing trade.

previous comments have highlighted that there are pockets of great indivdual shops, where you do get a good deal and a personal service, which will hopefully make buying gifts a pleasurable experience.

I will state that I have a vested interest as I am a trader in Broomhill and we would love to see more people taking the time to come and see what is available locally. (and often better value than what the high street chains are trying to sell you)

So please give your local area a chance to show what it has to offer and support Sheffield traders this Christmas

The Bell is OK, but doesn't usually have the type of beers on that I like (5%+).

The VAT and Fiddle near the station sells good beer (Castle Rock Screech Owl), as does the Kean's Head, The Trip To Jerusalem is a bit hit and miss, but overall I'd say there's less choice in Nottingham for the real ale enthusiasts.

The choice of buffet restaurants in Nottingham is better than Sheffield though. :hihi:

That probably accounts for the large number of obese people there!

Bell just OK - Trip 'hit and miss'? Well... Don't get me wrong, some nice real ale pubs in Sheffield, but there is nowt wrong with the Nottingham ones... What about the three brewers one, near broadmarsh? Clayton, Morton and Fellows, or some such! That was brewing onsite before real ale was fashionable...

That's fine - I accepted that there were 'some' in the city, but not loads as you had implied...

Apology accepted!

Your response didn't actually acknowledge that there were any in the city centre you implied they were all on the outskirts.

The Lincolnshire Poacher on Mansfield Road was my favourite Nottingham watering hole always a great pint.

I'd have to say Nottingham does have a good night life despite all of its other shortcomings and general unpleasantness.
