Go to nottingham to shop

You don't have to spend a fortune to dress better/differently to others... That's a beauty of having loads of choice - lot's of choice in the retail sector means everyone has to vie for your £... Sheffield just has a lump of tried and tested boring chain stores... Go to a city with more independents suddenly you have so much more choice re where that £ goes - so you don't have to miss C&A, as there are too many other options...

But I tend to like the major High Street chains like Boots, M&S, Next, Matalan, HMV and Primark.

I'm not a big one for clothes shopping, in fact I hate it, so I tend to try and get it all done in one quick shift and generally will target a particular type of shop for a particular item of clothing.

The Nottingham versions of the High Street chains are no bigger or better than those in Sheffield and if anything are smaller than the Meadowhall ones.

I like Nottingham as a place to head for a beer and a day out, I did my degree there and go back once a year with an old mate to look around the shops, have a few beers and get something to eat. From a shops point of view though Sheffield meets my needs just as well and probably better.

Now my Wife she's as tight as a ducks backside and likes a cheap bargain. She actually prefers Barnsley to Sheffield. For me Barnsley doesn't work because all their chain stores are much smaller than the Sheffield versions, so I usually leave her to it and head down to the Peel centre and browse in Argos, Maplin etc.

The point being it's horses for courses. Nottingham maybe better than Sheffield for shopping in certain areas, but for the likes of me it's no better.

I've never really been to Manchester or Leeds shopping so I can't really comment on those, although when I went to Selfridges at the Trafford Centre I was less than impressed.....I wouldn't particularly want one in Sheffield apart from the fact it would create jobs and offer some prestige.

Rarely go into Sheffield town centre, the moor etc but when i do the place just seems to just get worse, shops closed down, tat shops etc, this was such a lovely city to shop and walk around in, lost forever i think.

Perhaps then the point is more "Why are the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce being beaten to it when it comes to advertising the city and encouraging people to get out their and shop".

Maybe it's because they keep reading how wonderfully proud you all are of your city so assume that that's where people spend their money!!

I think it depends where you go in Sheffield.

I hate the Market area, it's scruffy and full of people I'd prefer not to mix with.

The area around the back of Cole Brothers is also not the best, although that was intended to be part of the delayed (Cancelled?) Sevenstones project.

However there are some areas that I think have really been improved and look impressive. The approach from the railway station puts Nottingham to shame and the area around the Winter Gardens and Millenium Square are very nice.

The problem with Sheffield is that it was a work in progress but unfortunately the recession delayed a lot of the major projects like Sevenstones and the Markets.

One thing the centre lacks and I'm amazed a city of this size doesn't have one and that's an indoor shopping area.

Barnsley, Wakefield, Doncaster, Nottingham (two) all have indoor centres in the city/town centre, but the closest Sheffield has is Orchard Square.....It's ridiculuous that a city of this size is missing out.

There are some independents - they are not in the city centre... Loads would be overstretching it though! There are also some shops of this nature in the outer areas of Nottingham, but when you go to a city for shopping, you want the shops within the city centre, not dotting here there and everywhere... If you were going to be racing around on public transport to see if the shoes in broomhill went with a top in hillsborough, you'd be better off in London where the tube would take you all over, and you'd get to buy something nicer still...

Apologies.

I hadn't realised Division street, Devonshire Street and chapel walk were no longer in the city centre

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you are getting at? I'm actually from Norwich which I actually think is a far nicer place to shop. There are certainly great things about Sheffield but shopping is not one of them. Independants are few and far between in the city centre/eccy road (compared to other cities) and all the big shops are in Meadowhall, which is the most depressing place you could possibly want to shop.

They are but I think they are overrated. I mean what is Division St these days apart from the Sainsburys, some bars and a Greggs? You've got The Forum shops and about 3 others. Mostly uninspiring.

Chapel Walk? I've been down there countless times and never noticed anything other than some nail and make-up places and a few sandwich shops. Fair play to them but hardly the shining light of Sheffield's independant retail offering.

We have Meadowhall, why go to Nottingham? (or Sheffield town centre for that matter)

tell you what mate...

go to Nottingham, have a good look round at the shops, and you'll answer your own question.

Or maybe you won't.

Because if all you are looking for are the big high street chain stores, like Boots, M&S, WH Smith, Waterstones, Costa Coffee, GAME, Debenhams, House of Fraser, blah blah blah then you are spot on. You can get all that in Meadowhall - no need to venture further. And you wouldn't appreciate Nottingham or Manchester for that matter.

Not picking on you mate - or anyone else for that matter. Look, it's quite simple, if you enjoy going to a place that has a big range of shops, loads of independent shops as well where you can buy things you'd never see in this city, if you like a great choice of bars and restaurants as well to complete the experience, then Nottingham, and even more so, Manchester, beat this big village hands down.

If that's not your thing then that's absolutely fair enough. You're in the right place. But some of us who live here would love Sheffield to have these facilities - and you ought to see that there is benefit in that - not least because it would bring in more money and you'll get more of your pot-holes in't road, filled in. Think of it that way if nothing else?

You're right, there is nothing appealing about shopping there, it's dull and Meadowhall isn't an alternative. There's no identity or personality in either place.

That's fine - I accepted that there were 'some' in the city, but not loads as you had implied...

Apology accepted!
