Go to nottingham to shop

It's hardly going to say "go to Rotherham to shop", the best shop is the pound shop.

Could say Barnsley - they have some better mens clothes shops... Doncaster has more high street stuff than Sheffield too... Noone will advertise shopping in Sheffield anytime soon - it needs taking over by a planner from a city that works and has variety...

Seriously, Sheffield does not have a whistles or a reiss anywhere, not a Vivienne Westwood even! Not even on Ecclesall Rd - Derby Rd has several vintage stores, including a shop that sells things that have been sold on from theatres, so literally anything from edwardian costume through to a feathered hat and furniture shops (nash was there until recently) of the sort that Sheffield simply doesn't have - independent, interesting and not mass produced... You'd be suprised how many people like to have something fairly unique - not everyone is satisfied with M&S and Asda and Debenhams... Sheffield thinks we're all the same, and all have low aspirations in out clothes and homewares - not so, so we shop elsewhere...

Had to edit to highlight that bit - what a numpty you sound to never want anything that the rest of your street doesn't already have! I'd never understood why mass produced crap was all over Sheffield, but I guess you taught me something about some people's low standards today...

There's loads of independent stores in Sheffield.

Ecclesall road, Abbeydale Road, Devonshire Street, Division Street and Chapel walk to name a few areas full of them.

There are some independents - they are not in the city centre... Loads would be overstretching it though! There are also some shops of this nature in the outer areas of Nottingham, but when you go to a city for shopping, you want the shops within the city centre, not dotting here there and everywhere... If you were going to be racing around on public transport to see if the shoes in broomhill went with a top in hillsborough, you'd be better off in London where the tube would take you all over, and you'd get to buy something nicer still...

Surely it all depends on what you want.

I can't say I'm particularly into expensive fancy clothes shops, so maybe Nottingham wouldn't appeal to me (I've been loads of times and can't say the shopping looks any better than Sheffield/Meadowhall). There's probably a better chance of getting shot though.

If I wanted to buy something electrical, then Sheffield and Meadowhall wouldn't appeal.....Rotherham Retail Park would be the place to go for me.

I went to Meadowhall for the first time in ages Monday Morning and I'd forgotten just how big the place is. If you like large versions of the major High Street chains it's superb, with a massive Marks and Spencers, Boots and Debenhams.

I'm afraid I don't have more money than sense, so I won't spend a fortune on a shirt, jeans or jumper just because it's different to anything anybody else is wearing.....Bring back C&A. :hihi:

I agree. I grew up in Nottingham and I still prefer it for shopping. The mix of chain stores and independents all within the city centre really give it the edge. I'm sure I'm not alone in shopping at both types of shops. There are a much wider selection of chain stores in Nottingham too, as others have mentioned. This is obviously because of Meadowhall in Sheffield. I really don't want to have to go into Sheffield City Centre, Meadowhall and Ecclesall Rd to get all my shopping.

I'm also from Nottingham, and wouldn't normally defend it on many points as I did leave for a reason and that reason was that there was more work in Sheffield than in Nottingham... Sheffield has always been poor for shops (since I have known it) and Nottingham just seems to get better and better - there wasn't a House of Fraser there when I left, but it's there now... They've got a enviable mix of stores that Sheffield should want for the city centre here, but seemingly don't as happy with things as they are....

It's an advert, probably paid for by Derbyshire & Nottingham Chamber of Commerce. What else would you expect them to say? Keep clear of Nottingham we've got the plague?

I hate to break it to you but those adverts in The Star are not public service announcements. They're paid for. Are you suggesting that The Star should only accept adverts (and thus income) based on some kind of regional bias?

Clearly you've never run a business in your life.

Perhaps then the point is more "Why are the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce being beaten to it when it comes to advertising the city and encouraging people to get out their and shop".

You don't have to spend a fortune to dress better/differently to others... That's a beauty of having loads of choice - lot's of choice in the retail sector means everyone has to vie for your £... Sheffield just has a lump of tried and tested boring chain stores... Go to a city with more independents suddenly you have so much more choice re where that £ goes - so you don't have to miss C&A, as there are too many other options...
