Fuming at 71 year old's 10 hour wait at NGH

My father in law had exactly the same thing today too (he was due to have his gall bladder out) -after at least 16 week wait. He also went in this morning at 7, and we got a call from him at 4.45 to say he still hadnt gone down, and was been sent home.

And to top it off he's been put back on the waiting list so got to wait for another letter!

Its absolutely disgraceful, he is 70 years old- had to get a taxi there, wasted a whole day sat around doing nothing, to then have to get 2 buses home when they finally told him he wouldnt be having it.... Told him to write and complain...

I can understand you're father in law been annoyed but to write and complain dont be so RIDICULOUS!!

The hospital staff haven't done anything you need to complain about, the staff have given ops to people needing them more than your father in law. its a pain but thats life.

I guess the feeling for the need to complain is an expression of their understandable frustration at the situation. To build yourself up to having an operation and then find out after a nervous 10 hour wait and then find out that you must go through this experience again must be absolutely awful.

In the cold light of day I'm sure everybody understands the reasons why cancelations like this occur.

Thats just an ignorant comment, yes he should complain. Yes it is a pain that he had to sit for 9 hours, but why didnt someone know at, lets say 1pm that they clearly were not going to get through that list, and send people home. By the sounds of it at least 3 people who have wrote on here havent had it done.... so why take so long in notifying them!?

Maybe they should re-think their operating list system....

It is annoying yes and feels awful i had it happen to me twice but someone obviously needed to be given an op before me for what ever reason. i wouldnt dream of complaining.

At 1 pm there may still have been a chance, at the RHH, so I'm guessing it's similar at the NGH, routine lists are scheduled to go onto 5:30 pm, with planned overrun lists also happening.

Well maybe (and this dose happen) the list was going down and the staff thought everyone could be seen the more emergency's came in. it happens its one of them things while as annoying as it is you have to accept the world dosent revolve around your father in law and his op wasnt as important as others waiting (even if you and he may think it is)

This is exactly the reason as to why private healhcare is needed or should be allowed to even be discussed or debated. But oh noooo....... because the British love their beloved National Health Service right? More like a third world health service. Let the nation have a debate and even attempt to have the mere discussion of the pro's and cons of such instead of immediately jumping on the "NHS is great" bandwagon. Our taxes would be a hell of a lot damn sight lower too!
