Debk Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 This morning after a 12 week wait my 71 year old mum went into the NGH for a scheduled gall bladder operation. She had to be there at 7am and couldn't have anything to eat or drink since last night. No one could wait with her, and we were told to call the hospital at 12noon to see if she had gone down for her operation. My sister had taken the day off work to be on standby to pick her up after the operation. We called the hospital at 12 and she was still waiting. Mum txt me at 3 to say she was still in the waiting room with a blanket around her and she was freezing cold. At 5:15pm Mum was told they wouldn't be able to do the op today and they would write to her giving her another date. She has head ache and back ache with sitting on the upright chairs for 10 hours Mum has respiritary & heart problems and has had the trauma of going in to the hospital, not having anything to eat or drink since yesterday and now the anxiety of having to go through this all again. I appreciate that there may have been an emergency come in today but surely this is not acceptable?
R.A.N.D Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 my grandfathers in there now he went in with a broken hip 10 weeks ago since going from a chaty old fella he as now had 2 strokes got msra and now basicly does not know who we are any more seems to me they dont give a toss about the elderly these days. check this link http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6127514/Sentenced-to-death-on-the-NHS.html
scottf Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I was supposed to have an operation last Friday and I went nil by mouth from midnight, I waited until 5pm and they eventually said that they wouldn't be able to do the operation and that they would reschedule. I was annoyed but to say its unacceptable is rather harsh, they will have done their best to get round to her but unfortunately they didn't manage it. The thing is, they can't guarantee that it's going to happen and it's obvious that it isn't vital surgery I'm just wondering what you want them to do? If someone comes in with life threatening injuries they are obviously going to go to the front of the queue.
Aries22 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Thats the trouble with old people of today, they dont shout and scream like the young of today, thats one lesson l have already learned, its scandalous.
rabitter Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 scottf no excuses.they should have enough staff to deal with emergency and scheduled ops.will somebody post on here how many private ops were cancelled.NONE

tasha_78_1 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 sometimes an operation on the list takes longer than expected, or an emergency arises and this means sometimes that operations are cancelled. Operating staff do have homes to go to you know, and cannot be expected to stay till whatever time to finish the list. I certainly wouldnt want my operation done by a theatre team who had already been working solidly for over 12 hours
