kblade Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Paddy (Staffie pup) is 15 weeks old and teething. The trouble is he bites EVERYTHING. Our daughter can't move without him biting her trousers and I can't sit down without him jumping up and biting. Just nips but with razor baby teeth - it bloody hurts! We're aiming for putting him in the kitchen for 5 minutes until he calms with a swift "NO" but it's hard to even get him there without a nip Any ideas?? He's growing fast and tries it on with our cat too
0742Sheff Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 It's worth noting that he doesn't nip me but i can not be there every moment of the day. When i shout his name or shout 'no' he generally stops it but only for a few seconds. We know he isn't trying to hurt anyone but he is causing damage to both lil 0742 and kblade every so often, so we would like any tips as to how we can stop him.
ami_j Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 make a loud yelp noise whenever he does it...thats how he would learn bite inhibition off his brothers and sisters
medusa Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Yes- yelp with the highest pitch you can manage, stand up and walk away if he's on you when you're sitting down, turn away from him if you were standing and generally act like you're really hurt and don't want to play. Pointedly not giving him any attention coupled with the yelping is the fastest way for him to learn that he's overstepped the mark. Then provide him with lots of things that he CAN chew, from Kongs to paddywack or similar (paddywack is really hard dried tendon that doesn't go soft like rawhide, so you can take it off him and wash it if necessary) so when you've got the not wanting to play bit over to him he has lots of things that he can exercise his jaw muscles and gums on without it being an issue to you, for which you can then praise him.
kblade Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 Thankyou for the advice. We shall keep you updated. He's a bright lad so I think we shall get there!
happymummy24 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 ive got same problem with my 8week old staffy puppy, but shes stone deaf so the yelping means nothing lol
Thirteen Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Try dabbing clove oil or Olbas oil on the back of one of your hands, trouser bottoms, slippers etc. The oil will not hurt animals but the smell (usually) makes them back off. Lots of praise as soon as they stop the mouthing and stroke them with the "clean" hand but make sure you have a couple of bottles hanging around the house.
*Peaches* Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Frozen carrots are great for teething dogs
0742Sheff Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Thanks folks. We seem to be making slow progress with him. I've been out and bought loads of Kong toys etc today. He now has 8 or 9 different things to keep him occupied. He's been like an excited little kid since i got back with them, running between them all, not having a clue which one to play with Those teeth are like needles though. He's not trying to bite or mouth me but i still have two extra cuts on my hand just from catching him at the wrong angle when playing with him.
Meter Man Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 If its any consolation his sister is the same ,When she goes to bite me i push her lip in with my finger so she thinks she is biting herself ,this is accompanied with a firm NO,it does seem to be working ,
