aelfheah Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I'm not up on tech stuff, and was asked this by a relative today. As dvd's have "upgraded" to Blu-Ray which is supposedly six times greater visual quality, will cd's also undergo another, similar audio revolution in future?
segasonic Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 They already did, in the form of DVD-Audio. It didn't take off.
quisquose Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 As segasonic said, DVD-Audio didn't take off. Neither did SACD. Killed by the iPod. Rather weirdly, just as video moved towards higher quality from VHS to DVD to BR, audio moved from CD to mp3. Less quality, but more convenience.
choogling Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I'm not up on tech stuff, and was asked this by a relative today. As dvd's have "upgraded" to Blu-Ray which is supposedly six times greater visual quality, will cd's also undergo another, similar audio revolution in future? When cd was introduced Philip's or sony laid down very strict conditions on the licence to manufacture Cd's and future developments/improvements were frowned upon. The 73 minute disc was one example. Cd is an old and almost obsolete technology the BBC dropped them years ago Most DJs use computers and mp3s nowadays my vinyl, Cd's and double decks are safely tucked away .Audio dvd was tried a few years ago but never caught on , the best possible sound will be the sound nearest to the source so digital ,possibly flac recordings from the master will be the norm played on solid state hard drives or from files stored on dvd .
ncreative Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I suspect the next move will be from MP3 to FLAC; a number of better quality PMPs support the format now and since it's open source, there's little to worry about in terms of licencing (unlike MP3).
little tank Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 I would hope so but don't think there's a Market more and more music is now downloaded and many services offer higher bit rate mp3/4s now too.
little tank Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Maybe hmv could offer a service where they would offer fast downloads to your device say 80p per track in shop
aelfheah Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 Wow, I'm a grandad already? Lol. Half of this just shot over my head, but thanks.
ElasticMan Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 As segasonic said, DVD-Audio didn't take off. Neither did SACD. Killed by the iPod. Rather weirdly, just as video moved towards higher quality from VHS to DVD to BR, audio moved from CD to mp3. Less quality, but more convenience. The difference being that the difference in quality between DVD quality and BluRay Quality is easy to notice - when you are watching on a 40inch TV you'll be able to tell the difference. When it comes to audio most people can't tell the difference between a CD track and an mp3 of 192kbps or above. The CD is an inefficient way of transferring data and offers no real benefit in terms of sound quality. (There are some people who believe they can tell the difference in quality - this may be true in some situations - eg where the listener has a very high quality stereo system and knows what to listen for - but tests repeatedly show that most people can't tell the difference with any more accuracy that simply guessing).
