Which was the best pub that closed in Sheffield and why?

Any one recall the "Who can Tell" some where off Petre St. Remember going in there lunch times from the EITB.

It was on Botham street, as you said just off Petre street, my grandma worked in it and my granddad use to run a bookies for the horse racing from it :hihi:

Botham Street/Ruthin Street, the streets are still there but not the pub which was Tennant's / Whitbread's beers.

For me it was The Cannon. I could buy cigarettes, perfume, razors, aftershave and much much more at less than the price in the shops from there!

You could even order something from certain customers and within half an hour they had been to their supplier and got it for you at a huge discount price! Even Wilkinsons could not compete on price.:)

 

I remember it being a druggies pub. Full of delinquents. Was that you?

The Greyhound down Attercliffe, used to love that place.

The only person I knew who had the pub was a bloke called Ernest ( didn't know his second name )

the highway pye bank rd demolished, met my future wife in there 1970 married 1976 went there couple of years ago and shed a tear couldn't even find a brick as a keep sake.

I cant remember his first name ,his wife used to put great stews on for the local workers at dinner time.

The Vine at Mosborough. What a great night out that was in the early 1980's. Had some wonderful times in there.

Certainly some areas have been hit worse than others;

 

One example - Wincobank / Brightside / Grimesthorpe;

 

Forum - Open

Rising Sun - Now flats

Railway - Open

White Swan - Demolished

Crown - Open

Bridge - Demolished

Foundry - Now a beauty salon

Barrow House - Demolished

Wincobank Hotel - Open

Sheffield Arms - Now a shop

Firth Park Hotel - Now a community centre

Cannon Hotel - Demolished

Ball Inn - Open

 

 

Thats 5/13 still open having all been open c. 15-20 years ago.

roman ridge - gone

horseshoe - gone

wharncliffe - gone

sicey - gone

pheasant - gone

bell house club - gone

steel city club - gone

all sorely missed
