Which was the best pub that closed in Sheffield and why?

Recommended Posts

Thanks Jim Hardie - I get it now. Of the many pubs that were in and around Sheffield for many many years, what would anybody's estimate be on percentage of closures, because that's all I have read on the Forum for the last number of years? fleetwood

I'd say about 50% in the suburbs. Many have had a change of use, convenience stores mainly. Others just stand empty.

The Whetstone on Cumberland Street. I worked there in the early 70's for Eileen and Tom Walsh.

Pitsmoor too. I think there are only a few left : Normanton (Grimesthorpe Road), Royal Oak and Staffordshire (both Gower Street area) and perhaps one of the two that were near the Toll Gate on Pitsmoor Road, the Bay Horse and the Pitsmoor.

There was also in Grimesthorpe, the 'Alex' (Carlisle Street East) and the 'Beehive' and 'Bowling Green' (Upwell Lane). Which 'Crown' do you mean, not the one on Carlisle Road ?

Yes remember the bowling green - the Alex closed before I was about and never heard of the beehive - was there also one called the tea gardens in grimethorpe - again would be before my time.

The crown I was talking about is on Meadowhall road I think - bronco layne used to have it.

Thank you, The 'Beehive' was on Upwell Lane next to the Reform chapel. The 'Tea Gardens' was on Grimesthorpe Road near Buckenham Road in Pitsmoor.

I,m surprised no one has mentioned The Adelphi opposite corner to the Lyceum theatre, when big John ran it in the 60s until its demolition to make way for the Crucible!.It was always full any day of the week!.We always met up there before going out anywhere else on a pub crawl or coach trips out of town to different licenced premises,in my opinion the best pub in town at that moment in time!,happy days not forgotten!.
