swordfish1 Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 I know I've missed New Orleans at it's best, but just wondering if anyone has been lately and if it's worth visiting? Has got back some of it's former glory after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005?
TheGuy Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Apparently hardly anything has been done at all; Top Gear did an episode there a couple of years after and it still looked like hell on earth.

Yeah, I saw that episode. I've also seen so many reports on how Top Gear aren't to be believed. It makes better telly. For instance it could be the outer lying districts that are still in a state. I've just been on google street view and it looks ok. I just have no idea if it's still got a good vibe and is worth visiting.
Rupert_Baehr Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 I went to NO a number of times between March 2007 and April 2008 (haven't been there since then, though.) The French quarter (the tourist area) was largely undamaged by Katrina. It was probably never a good idea to stray outside the French quarter on foot and in 2008, it was certainly not advisable to do so. A number of the residents decided not to return to the City and (certainly in 2007/08 ) there were areas which were sparsely populated,(particularly around the lower 9th) poorly policed and acted as havens for criminals. Those areas were nowhere near where the tourists were likely to go, however. Here's an article written by a long-time resident of New Orleans last year (AFAIK.) It presents a pretty fair picture, IMO.
