llamatron Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 The BBC are reporting that deer are causing damage to woodland so they are thinking of more extensive deer culling-what is the point? Forest populations survived perfectly well without us interfering for centuries, nature has it covered. The only thing we should be worrying about is minimising our effect on nature not interfering with nature itself. We are so stupid sometimes:rant: Rant over!
HeadingNorth Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Did they mention which species of deer? If it's the one that we imported from China sometime in the 19th century for our own selfish purposes, then maybe there is a case to be made that we're responsible for what damage it does. But on the whole I agree with you; the notion that woodland should be "preserved" in exactly the form that we want it so that we can appreciate how pretty it looks or how useful it is, is a fairly ridiculous one.

It seems to be talking about both species because of how successful the deer population is. Its like trying to reintroduce red squirrels, we have ruined it by introducing the grey squirrel and its too late to do anything about it, why not let evolution occur. They have also had success with the wolf population in Europe, so now they are having to kill wolves which find out how easy it is to take sheep-we are creating our own problems.

It was the extinction of the wolf that has allowed the deer to increase in population. Remove the predator and you remove nature's way of keeping them in check.

Our constant messing with things just means we have to mess more, leave it alone and everything will stabilise, there will be a population crash when the deer population is too high anyway.

Gotcha! sorry, thought you were heading in a different direction with this. In which case ' why do we keep messing.' The red squirrels demise isn't only to do with the grey however, greys have a more varied diet which helped increase there numbers and they adapt to new surroundings easier. Deforestation has been the greater threat to the Red. Introducing wolves, i'm all for it. Farmers, I couldn't give a fig for them, most would obliterate anything in order to preserve their livelihood.

I watched it as well and just thought it’s the human population that is the biggest threat to the planet, all other animal populations will be controlled by their food supply.
Alien52 Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Important to remember that venison does taste very good !
Murphy Jnr Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Important to remember that venison does taste very good ! Well there's a few hundred thousand steaks roaming Scotland at present
fruitisbad Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 ??? the population is out of controll because it has no predators, us and other carniavores. we have been 'messing round' with nature since the dawn of man
