RIP - Red arrows pilot confirmed to have died

Red Arrows commanding officer has just confirmed that a member of the team died follow deployment of the ejector seat on the ground.

Another sad loss, thoughts with his familly and the rest of the team.

I doubt the parachute would ever be effective after ejecting from ground level?
Those seats have both a cannon rail and a rocket booster pack which are designed to provide sufficient altitude for the parachute to effectively deploy even if ejecting at ground from a takeofff or landing emergency.

It is very, very rare for Martin Baker seats to malfunction and, sadly, is more likely to have been a maintenance error in packing the seat or removing safety pins before flight.

All speculation at this stage of course.

I looked it up - there are seats that are designed to functional at ground level - not sure if the arrows had them. My comment about the parachute was from the newspaper linked to earlier.

I wonder if it was the new pilot, or one of the current crew.

The pilot's family have asked for a few days' privacy to grieve, before the name is released. (Which won't stop people wondering, but will explain why they haven't found out yet.)

Given the family had asked for 24 hours privacy i hope the daily mail are boycotted by all British forces for releasing the name against their wishes.

I agree. I wasn't sure whether I should post on here but the name is already out there now.

Not knocking you for posting it mate, like you say it's out there now, thanks to the asshats at the mail who couldn't resist a "scoop" against a grieving famillies wishes.

I just can't believe how tragic this is - and so soon after the death of Flt tT Jon Egging in August.

I presume the reason for the delay is that the pilot who has been named has family overseas.

On a similar note, I gather from a trip to the barbers that the Sun have been doorstepping relatives of the M5 dead.
