I remember a Mark Askham that went to Thornbridge (now Birley) in the late 80's seem to recall he also had two elder brothers.

I did.

I was there from 78-81 before being carted off down the hill to Basegreen Junior.

I remember Mrs Hollier, Miss Raben or was it Raven.

I remember the janitor fella with a tash that used to hang around behind that white area in the playground where the bins were. It always used to smell of tar.

Playing football with bean bags as they wouldn't let us use a ball.

The haunted toilets at the top of the stairs near the staff room.

The big hall that we used to do nativity plays in.

Father Xmas arriving to give us crap presents.

Teddy Bear picnics on the field behind the school.

The play area with some water and sand and loads of salt.

Having to sing "ocki toki unga" 800 times a week.

I remember loads of pupils.

I won't print full names but a selection of the surnames I remember are:

proctor (f)

foster (f)

hadfield (m)

taylor (m)

crookes (m)

Diamond (m)

Damms (m)

McDowell (f)

Waller (f)

Bellamy (m)

Wright (f)

You missed out Miss walker, whom has just retired from Birley primary! And mrs Hammond, who used to enjoy giving the slipper out more than lessons!

Infants, 1976: Miss Selby, head. Miss Frith, deputy. Mrs Whitlock, Mrs Adams, Mrs Garlick, Mrs Hollyer (last two were sisters), classroom teachers. Mrs Reaney was the CCA. Miss Selby retired in 77ish and was replaced by Mrs Shimwell who sadly died a few years later, to be replaced by Mrs Raban. Well, that's what I can remember of the staff team.

Infants 1960 (oooh I'm getting old!) Miss Beale

oh - so finally some memories of Frecheville infants.

Miss Beale - totally eccentric but lovely! Seem to recall she had lots of cats!

Can't believe Miss Selby lasted SO long - she seemed old in 1960! Remember she thumped me on the back in the dining hall (which was located up the road from the infants school) because I wouldn't eat my tomatoes!

Didn't Mrs Maxwell's husband also teach at the Juniors? I recall there was a husband and wife team there. Or was Mrs Maxwell the redhead teacher at the infant school?

Remember the nativity play - I have a photo from what must be 1960 - will scan and add to this post.

Remember also Linda Cundy Susan Umpleby, Jeannette Cartwright.

Do you remember the little shop with the 'tarts' and 'cakes' in the beginners room?

Also remember a ballet performance of the Red Shoes - was it Moira Shearer who came to dance or is that wishful thinking?

Frecheville Juniors (at the bottom of the hill in the Jaunty estate) was a brand new 'state of the art school' in the early '60s - interested to know what it's like know?
