Can I leave any of the above veg in the ground over winter? Just don't want to pick it all and it get ruined. Also if the allotment is redundant over the winter, what should I do with it?  Only got the allotment this year, this is all very new...
 Share this content via...
suebeedoo   10 #2 Posted November 7, 2011 Leeks and some carrots will be fine over the winter, in fact I think that a few frozen nights make leeks taste even nicer (certainly does the job on sprouts). I don't think the salad crops will do that well though. But it's your first year, try it and learn from the experience!  Winter is the right time to start preparing your beds for the spring. If your soil needs it, and depending on your planting system, you can cover your beds in well rotted manure and black polythene and let the worms do the digging for you until you are read to plant next year. You can plant some stuff now too, some varieties of onions and shallots can go in now, and you will get a nice early crop of peas and broadbeans next year if you plant them now too. rabitter   10 #4 Posted November 13, 2011 never heard of a allotment being redundant in winter.plenty of veg will stand all winter to be picked for the table empty spaces want compost or fertiliser digging in,trenches want opening up to let frost in prior to planting first potatoes, thats in dec jan you get your onion sets on in seed trays under cover.then early peas on in trays, then broad beans can tell the difference between gardens that dont get no care in winter they have a rubbish summer
 Share this content via...
