epiphany Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Or support local businesses? Tough choice, what with that butt slappin' Asda price guarantee, and so much choice under one roof. Ok I may just buy my bread from there. Can't be doing with paying more than a quid for a loaf. Oh and while I'm there might as well pick up a few tins. Wow beer is pretty cheap here too. Come to think of it, I'd save loads on my weekly shop. Might as well fill my trolly up. I can eat loads more for less! Support local business
Jessica23 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I probably will, yes. Along with the other local businesses. No one seemed to get so cross about Netto being there, what's the difference?

No one seemed to get so cross about Netto being there, what's the difference? Fair point and I did shop at Netto a fair bit. I don't think people should get cross about them being there, just consider the effect on local food stores. I don't know why but I get the feeling Asda will have more of an impact than Netto did.
Kthebean Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Would still urge everyone to use Chris Beech butchers instead of the Asda. Its cheaper, and better quality. And no, hes not my mate, just my butcher

And no, hes not my mate, just my butcher Thats all well and good but this Chris Beech wouldn't be able to service everyone in the area with meat, supply wouldn't be able to match the demand and his meat would be sold at an absolute premium, which is of course what he wants.
mogwai84 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 The shops on South Road have gradually disappeared in the last few years, so it seems that Asda are meeting low supply and probably high demand, rather than gobbling up local businesses. If the local shops are offering good products and good prices then that's great, I use the local shops in Hillsborough but still do a weekly shop at the supermarket, and I think there's room for both in Walkley too.
RichJay Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I will probably use the ASDA instead of walking up to the COOP in Crookes.
Cafe_Masala Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 This may sound contradictory but a lot of small businesses around South Road actually depend on Asda/Netto to bring people into the area and boost business. I know many of them, including us, are waiting for the new Asda to open to increase the passing trade.
Cyclone Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I'll still use Tescos on Infirmary Road, an Asda convenience is too small to do a proper shop and not close enough to do anything else.
