Bethsmummy Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Had a wonderful time tonight at Clifton park Fireworks, As I do every year. A lovely atmosphere in a beautiful setting and then finished with a very nice firework display. Year after year Rotherham provide this for their community and dont worry to ask for so much as a donation towards the cost. Upon our departure, We walked past many many cars which although technically parked "illegally" were parked with considerationd I.E. None were hampering neither other traffic passing by nor Pedestrians on the pavements. All these car occupants had presumably gone to watch the fireworks and returned to their car having had a wonderful night and went home feeling very happy I'm sure. Compare this to sheffield lastnight. When I also went to after dark. First of all The tickets were priced at a whopping £10pp (I know its a very very good display which is why I go but £5 would more than cover and attract more people) The price is a disgrace in itself but upon leaving we were surprised to see AN ARMY of "civil enforcement officers" furiously ticketing illegally but again considerately parked cars. I mean every single member of staff mustve been ordered to work. If you ask me it was a set up. Britney Spears was also playing the Motorpoint Arena lastnight which alone would put strain on parking in and around the attercliffe area but to time that to coincide with what must be Don Valleys largest event of the year was just ludicrous. So well done Sheffield City council for making a lovely family orientated festival into a money spinning scam for the people of Sheffield. You should be ashamed of yourself And a big thankyou to Rotherham for making bonfire night what it should be. about. A celebration that comes without any strings attached.

How can any car which is parked illegally be parked considerately? It's contravening a restriction which is there for a good reason. People who park illegally at such events, basically do so because they can't be bothered to find somewhere legal to park, so they fully deserve to be ticketed and it's you who should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting otherwise.
sheffgrow Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 when i was a kid i always remember going to the fireworks display in norfolk park and as far as i recall there was others around the city, now there is nothing apart from the overpriced rip off at don valley, what has the x factor rejects got to do with bonfire night? guido fawkes must be turning in his grave
Bethsmummy Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Nope sorry I did no wrong I've got nothing to be ashamed of. My daughter is a blue badge holder so I couldve parked anywhere I liked within blue badge holders rules. I chose to park on a very quiet industrial side road with no parking restrictions and walk that bit further. But with parking all around Attercliffe very scarce I do not blame families for parking on a road with double yellow lines at 8pm on a Saturday night (provided it caused no traffic issues and provided a wheelchair/buggy could pass by on the pavement side) Its a disgrace that Sheffield city council felt it neccessary that this was unacceptable when clearly it was not an issue for other road users.
Litotes Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 It's contravening a restriction which is there for a good reason. Not necessarily - sometimes the restrictions are there due to red tape, not due for a good reason.

I miss the old Endcliffe Park ones though, they were great.
Bethsmummy Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 People slate rotherham on this forum because they are too narrow minded and stupid to see every town/city has good and bad points. Rotherham has always provided good shows whether that be in summer, bonfire night etc..... They provide a fantastic park which is amazing compared to sheffields. Some housing areas are lovely and not overpriced. Every town/city in the uk im sure has great positives! Well done rotherham on this occasion. Spot on. Well done Rotherham!!!

It was a council run freebonfire and we had a wail of a time. We were so grateful and without it I would have never experienced anything similar as my parents at that time struggled for every last penny. It goes through me to think that there will still be kids out there who have never experienced something like that because parents cant afford £25-£30 to get in the After dark event. So greedy and grasping its a disgrace no matter how you look at it. And as for ticketing cars of the very people who are lining their pockets is ridiculous. Do the council think those people are ever going to attend the event again????? It'll stick out in their memories as a very bad night.
Sarkysod Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I bet the council tax paying people of Rotherham are really glad that you "gatecrashed" their firework display without making a contribution, i.e. paying yours to Sheffield City Council. I would rather my council tax be spent on vital services, not fireworks. I went to After Dark with my family and paid my way for the event. I don't see why I should demand such events to be paid for by the council, when I know the money is needed for more important services in Sheffield. The main concern is that with the current lot, it was probably spent on hob nobs for the meeting to discuss the next meeting. As for the parking issue, if you don't know where is considerate or not to park, re evaluate your road knowledge.
