Not to sure, but undertaker could well be right on this one, I have also heard that it is John Heath & Son who have bought it, but the person who told me this seems to think that they are being backed by the Dignity Group (Don't know how true this is, but it is happening a lot where a supposed family owned business is actually owned by a multi-national, the undertaker gave the classic example when mentioning John Fairest being owned by the national co-op). Anyway whoever buys it I wish them good luck because I know the area round the building has had problems with gangs of youths and drug addicts over the last few months.

Just heard that John Heaths may be closing down at Pitsmoor and moving their whole operation to the High Greave, could be another rumour though

On doing some further research, John Heaths are setting up a branch to their main operation at Pitsmoor. They are definitely not closing down the main office. It's where they make all their own coffins and everything. The former pub is nowhere near big enough for what they have there.

Thanks for the info undertaker, although with a name like that I thought you would be well in the know. John Heaths must be doing really well for themselves if they are opening up another branch. With all their branches now they must be carrying out well over a thousand funerals a year in the City. That's big money because I know from experience that they really know how to charge. Good luck to them I say, if they can get away with high charges and people will pay a premium then they will surely continue to grow and expand throughout the City and maybe even beyond. I am a big fan of the one at Wadsley Bridge.

It had a sign on it today when i passed saying John Heaths I didn't know the pub had gone till today

It was also a polling station at the last election, you may be pleased to note that the boxes to put your vote in were the normal shape.

I went in the greave for many years started early 70s, landlord then was a little fat bloke think his name was Eric, that was before the extension went on, the pub then was half sized. Then a bloke called Terry took over with his wife Flo, I moved and stopped going in then, remember loads of lads from that era as I lived just up the road

The first Landlord and Landlady in the new High Greave were Arthur and Agnes Gregory, who had been licencees at the old High Greave. They had a son called Eric, who stood in for them from time to time. However Eric (my neighbour) was not fat at all. Perhaps there was another Eric though.
