WRONG....the ticket scheme was to keep out the unwanted on new years eve (once a year drinkers,****** up idiots ect ect) just so the regulars were guaranteed a place and none of the regulars actually paid to get in,the 'tickets' were non existant to regulars, and as for the parties they were very rare, unless jeannie knew who's party it was then it was unlikely she would agree to it.

And to suggest the regulars would get banned at the weekend is bang out of order, the regulars kept the place going and if there was a party in the lounge then its ten to a penny the regulars knew who's party it was and would join in the party

I can fully understand keeping the once a year crowd out on NYE but then why not

just give the tickets out to regulars with no cover charge, believe me money was exchanged to gain entry on NYE for the regulars and put on a bit of a spread as a end of year thanks for their custom.

Maybe using the word banned was incorrect but I know of many a time when my parents and a lot of the other weekday regulars in the Greave been turned away from the lounge side of the pub at the weekend due to a private function. Nothing wrong with trying to make money with a private function but it was a bit short sighted of them to do it at the expense of the regulars who kept the place going all of them years.

the travellers, it mainly does meals, i think uptil 9pm, the meals arent too bad & theyre reasonably priced, the place could do with a better cleaner though cos 9 times out of 10 your table is always sticky. since all the shiregreen mob stopped going in cos the pub was concentrating on meals, all the trouble has stopped, give it a try sometime, they have meal offers on constantly 2 for 1 etc

yes but you are buying 2 half meals rather than 2 full meals IMO

The place isnt becoming a funeral parlour as such,it is to be a meeting place for people before they go to the funeral (got it on good authority),there were 3 other bids who wanted to keep the place as a pub but the people who have it now paid over the asking price and brewery grabbed it, and as for the pub itself it was a cracking little pub with some bloody good punters and damned good bar staff ;)

Its downfall started when a bunch of regulars followed a certain crowd when the malthouse re-opened after refurbishment (not blaming them),plus the brewery seriously didnt help regarding ground rent and beer prices,as any regular will tell you jeannie always left it as late as she could before applying the increase in price.

Miss a hell of a lot of punters from there, even the coffin dodgers playing cribb on a friday night

Jeannie has a new pub now Crown Inn at ellsecar

You cannot blame other people for the down turn in the pub - people can spend their money anywhere and from personal experience I know who went to the Malthouse and that was family members of the people who ran it.

Well if you paid to gain entry then you were definetly in the minority and cant have been that much of a regular, the regulars didnt need tickets and jeannie used to put on a bit of grub for anyone who wanted it in there not only on NYE,games nights, disco & karaoke nights, poker nights ect,she never charged for it and yes the lounge side was closed occasionally for functions, but you name me 1 pub that doesnt do the same, and if the regualrs wanted to drift into the party later on then nothing was said, god they even used to help themselves to the buffet, old viv used to run people over to get to the buffet table.

YES the regulars kept the place going but they were well looked after

dont blame them at all loobyloo as i have already said, was just stating it as 1 of the reasons trade started to decrease, and i totally agree people can go wherever they choose.

And i also know the people who ran it,say hi to mad dog and lisa next time you see them and hope her foot is mended

supposedly been bought by a funeral director & being turned into a funeral parlour

Sounds like the final nail in the coffin for this one

I heard its been bought by the Dignity Funeral group under the guise of a family owned business

I think you are wrong - "the word at the Crem" - is that it has been bought by John Heath Funeral Directors. I could be wrong, but suspect I am not. They are a local family owned business.

I also heard from an incorrect source that it had been bought by the national Co op under their trading name of John fairest, but I know this not to be the case.

My Dad and Brother virtually bought that place,Dad said he was the last to drink in the old High Greave and the 2nd in the current one !

but that place nearly bankrupted our family

Which is why I never really went in more than 3 times :)

JJ..:)
