GOLDEN OLDIE Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I seem to remember my mother getting not only malt, virol and cod liver oil from a clinic I think at Firth Park in the 1950s. Were we seriously undernourished after the War? Anyone else remember?
Joanl Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Don't forget the Orange Juice as well (vit C).....and yes I suppose we were lacking in certain vitamins.
GOLDEN OLDIE Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Yes, wasn't the orange jouice in small bottles and had to be diluted? Was the clinic on North or West Quadrant where there is still, I believe a NHS clinic?

Were we seriously undernourished after the War? Anyone else remember? Yes, all three; plus orange and Rose Hip Syrup. The trend in those days was to have bonnie (aka fat) babies, otherwise they were malnourished!

I also remember having "malt",thick brown sticky stuff,in a brown jar,it was yummy,we got ours from the school clinic, our school (shiregreen juniors)had it's own clinic where you were issued with malt, and dare i say it "nit lotion".you always knew who had them cause they came out of the clinic clutching a bottle that was usually in a brown paper bag,if i remember rightly the "lotion" smelt horrid.
bullerboY Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I loved all of it apart from the cod liver oil, never found orange juice that tastes as good to this day.
louan Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 At Western Road School we got a small bottle of milk in the morning and a bottle of orange juice in the afternoon. In winter the milk was sometimes half frozen and in summer gone off. Haven't drunk milk pure since then.

During the mid '50s there must have been a milk shortage for a short time because instead of a bottle of milk we were given a packet of fruit flavoured milk tablets, similar to Horlicks tablets. If you didn't like the flavour given to you then you tried to swap with a mate. louan I'm sure you'd have preferred them to the liquid.
nosy nellie Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I have never tasted orange juice like the ones we got from the clinic,we also had a chocolate drink I think they called it something like Colact it was lovely. Can anyone else remember it and have I got the name right?
SILLY Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I loved all of it apart from the cod liver oil, never found orange juice that tastes as good to this day. Me too I used to have my orange juice to take away the taste of the cod liver oil. The malt I used to go and get an extra spoonful when my Mum was not looking. It has taken a long time to work but I am not malnourished now
