How am I supposed to buy food & heating tokens with only £14.25 a week?

Recommended Posts

Finally got my JSA & Housing / Council benefit claim sorted, done a spreadsheet of the bare minimum I must pay out every week and only have £14.25 each week for Food, Heating Tokens & Petrol.

Until I get another job how do you other JSA claimants survive? Any tips or advice massively appreciated

By getting rid of non-essetials.

The car was my first casualty when I lost my job.

Secondly, do you need Sky Sports and 4 lottery lines each week ?

Also, is there something that you've not listed?

Your figures aren't correct if you've listed everything.

Sky is on a 12 month half price contract and can't cancel it.

Paranoid of canceling lottery in-case my numbers come up.

What do you think is missing?

None of those are necessities for a start (£4 for lottery and SKY sports, seriously?). I think a telephone line and internet connection are desirable to help you back in to work though.

If you are unemployed then each debt goes down to a standard £1 per month and no creditor will argue with it. Same goes for your bank overdraft. Don't let them bully you. No court in the land will make you pay more if you are on benefits.

You cancel the subscription and wait for them to get in touch. Explain your situation, hopefully they will understand. If they don't, you let them pass it on to their recovery department and you pay them £1 a month. As i said above, no one can argue with you.

If you want to buy lottery tickets instead of food and heating, that is up to you, but you can't blame the benefits system for leaving you that £4 short.

if you tell sky you cant afford them no more and you gonna leave then they will let you stay with them and just let you have freeview channels, free of cause. ditch the car, but get a push bike in case you have to work nights when buses dont run, and just be careful with money, buy in food weekly not daily and use cheaper shops/ or reduced items with short dates on them etc. if you have a washing machine use the daily cycle on 30/40 deg,(quick) and dont use dryer but airer instead, need any advice on budgeting just ask me please, it can be done !!!!!! only just though:huh:

Here's an idea - get a job (or two if necessary). Wok in a shop, fast food restaurant, clean, shelf stack - don't expect the tax payer to fund your lottery gambling addiction and your indulgent television package if you can't afford to pay for it yourself.

Just the figures you have listed come to 53.25 not 47.75 which is why there may be a bit of confusion. I have to agree the car would go, as would the sky sports and the lottery. You can't really expect people to have some answer to how you can survive and buy heating and food when you choose to spend a significant proportion on those things.
