growup Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 You cannot get working tax credit but think you can claim jsa if you work less than sixteen hours a week
fisch Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 U have 2 work 16 hours or more 2 be able 2 claim working familys tax credits, if in reciept of income support you can earn £20 a week before it effects your benefit but you have 2 declare it, best advice would be for your friend 2 contact benefit enquiry help line they will be able to give more accurate information
gaze1981 Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 a friend who is unemployed has been ofered 8 hours in a shop but was told that unless he has 16 hour or more he could not claim any help in benerfits is this right and would he be left with just 8 hours pay paid monthly to live on ? Much more information needed to give a full answer but..... If your friend is single and lives alone, they can claim Jobseekers Allowance. If they are 25 or over, they can receive £67.50 a week. If under 25, they get £53.45. Whilst claiming JSA, you can work up to 16 hours a week. However, whatever earnings they receive will be taken off their JSA. So, if they are working 8 hours at minimum wage of £6.08, which comes to £48.64, this will be taken off their JSA. It all depends on their age and circumstances. It can change if they are living at home, with a partner, with a child etc. Working Tax Credits won't apply in this case due to the hours worked.
chem1st Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 If single he/she would be allowed an income disregard of £5. They could earn £5 before benefits are deducted. JSA would be reduced at a rate of 100% If they worked 8 hours, they would have a £5 income disregard, earn £48.64 at £6.08 an hour and lose £43.64 in JSA. They would still have to sign on.
