Don't you just wish people would think before posting a missleading title to a post.

Corrected :)

As for the idea of selling off the maintenance, one of the companies being considered for the contract has managed the land and maintenance of much of the motorway network of England (including the M25) for many years, and hasn't managed to steal any of the roads yet.

It seems the Labour council is going to literally sell the roads out from underneath us as they are incapable of maintaining them.

Do the Labour fans think this is a good idea?

Presumably the LibDem "fans" still think its a good idea?

'Productive' Meeting On Bid To End Pot Hole City Tag

London Highways PFI

Leading Liberal Democrat Councillors from Sheffield have reported that they had a 'productive' meeting with the Transport Minister in London in which they urged Government to deliver on the huge investment earmarked to improve Sheffield's roads and pavements. Cllr Paul Scriven, Lib Dem Leader of Sheffield City Council, and Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed, Lib Dem Cabinet member for Communities, met with Liberal Democrat Transport Minister Norman Baker MP to discuss the importance of the Highways PFI scheme to Sheffield.

The total package of £2 billion relies on £675m of PFI credits from the Government. Work to fix all of Sheffield's roads, pavements and streetlights is due to start in the summer, but that depends on the Government agreeing to release the money in the Public Spending Review.

Cllr Paul Scriven said: "We had a productive meeting and ensured that Sheffield's voice is heard in Whitehall."

"We know that fixing Sheffield's roads and pavements, which have been allowed to deteriorate for years under Labour, is a top priority for local people. We are determined to deliver this huge investment for Sheffield."

The Highways PFI project, dubbed the 'Streets Ahead' project, is a 25-year highway maintenance project. A total of £2 billion will be invested into the City's highway network over the coming 25 years.

Sheffield's highway network contains 2,000km of road, 65,000 streetlights, 480 traffic signals, 350 bridges and other structures and 35,000 highway trees city-wide and the Project covers the maintenance of all of these assets.

Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed said: "After years of Labour neglect, Liberal Democrats want to lose Sheffield's tag as 'pot hole city' forever. Securing this investment from the Government is a key part of that and local Lib Dems will continue to do everything possible to ensure that the project survives the public spending review later this month."

I have no faith whatsoever in this being a great deal for the taxpayer, judging from past projects along similar lines I imagine this will have us over a contractual barrel and on the whole will serve little purpose but to enable the council to shirk any responsibility while leaving the investors plenty of room to screw the living daylights out of us (as per).

.....and why does it have to a 25year contract, seems a long time to be stuck with something when it inevitably turns bad.

Why do the cons complain when a liebore council complies with conservative policies (outsourcing to the highest bidder for council contracts was introduced by mad maggie).

You seem to have overlooked the fact that the majority of the funding for this is provided directly by the ConDem government.
