Duckegg Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Hi I'm having trouble accessing the log-in page for a couple of websites. One of which is Santander. From home page, it cannot open log-in, skips to "freecause.com" and then says - error cannot find DNS server. I know it is accessible from other computers. Could it be something I don't have enabled/coded or whatever? Duckegg
dosxuk Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Which browser are you using (i.e. Internet Explorer / Chrome / Safari / Firefox)? Have you recently installed any toolbars?
Duckegg Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Hi dosxuk Ta for replying. I'm using Internet explorer and occasionally Chrome. Same thing happens with both. I don't have any new tool bars. I did download a new version of McAfee a few weeks ago but have now uninstalled it as it is a pain, so i don't think it can be that.
Greengeek Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Open up a command prompt and type in Ipconfig /flushdns See if that makes a difference.
Duckegg Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Erm, will it do anything weird? I am a panicky with all things technical, especially the black command prompt! Can I do any harm?
Paul Blade Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Not if you follow instructions The people on here I'd say are about 99.999999999999999999999999% certain what they are doing if you are not sure just have a quick look at some threads over the last month or so and decide if any person answering knows what they post about If you look at most off the posters on here have a sig at the bottom of their post either like Greengeek are tech people others are as well but don't have it in their sigs If not sure check
sccsux Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I did download a new version of McAfee a few weeks ago but have now uninstalled it as it is a pain, so i don't think it can be that. So what AV/FW are you using (if any)? I've no problems with the reaching the Santander log in screen. Sound like you've got something nasty lurking in there (hosts file hijack)? Freecause looks like a dodgy toolbar/software (many posts on google about it's removal). http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=freecause.com+removal
Duckegg Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 I am using a trial version of AVG until I sort out McAfee. McAfee wouldn't update automatically, uninstalled itself once and now I cannot use that log-in page either! - I can't download it again and have a paid up subsription. The McAfee techs are trying to help but it's too complex for me and I wonder if it's part of the same problem with the log-in pages. They don't read my emails properly and don't see that I don't have McAfee installed, cant install cos of log in issue and therefore can't troubleshoot it. I am seriously fed-up! The techs did also mention is could be a host thing (whatever a host is) and gave me instructions to re-set the hosts with command prompt. I am too scared to do this as I dont wish to change any pc settings just for McAfee. Any ideas?
Duckegg Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 sccsux - by the way, Freecause is not in my list of programmes, how can I eliminate it? Can't think where it came from.
