Advice needed regarding dog with issues

I was listening to a vet only yesterday, who suggested building a small shelter/tent inside your house, for nervous dogs on bonfire night, as they can then go inside and it helps them feel more secure.

Hi thank you everyone for your replys.

most of what has been mention has been tried with either no or little change, The main promblem is and I know I will sound selfish when I say this is that my family cannot have a normal life due to his issues my kids have not seen a firework display for years since we got him we don't go out as often as most familys do due to not wanting to leave him for long and balloons are a triggers so birthday balloons are a no no.

Strix thank you for your honest post you are right 3 years is a long long time I see people giving up on their dogs on this forum for all kinds of reasons and don't want to be just like them but due to my young family I wouldn't have ever homed a dog it were due to the situation I had no choice but I have to say taking him to the vets and putting him at peace has crossed my mind.

The fireworks are going off tonight and I have to say he isn't as bad as previous years I thing the calm tablets may have worked a little so maybe there is hope for him yet

A brave thing so say Strix but i have to say i agree, dudeyblue has done extremely well with this little dog, and has obviously given him a lovely home, but three years is a very long time, and bless him he sounds like he just lives in a tormented world,

good luck with what ever you decide its a very difficult situation for you.

One of our volunteers has a gsd who was terrified with fireworks.

We got some herbal tablets from the wholesalers - can't remember their names - but they have worked a treat and shes so chilled out

Sometimes though - it needs a different approach to the problem. Your dog seems to be 'locked' into her fears - give us a call tomorrow - and i can tell you the name of the rememdy. We have a spare few here you can come and get and try. and its good to know that they work. We also work with a couple of really good trainers that i am happy to recommend, and maybe Lottie or Andy will help - I know lottie has offered above and is local to sheffield.

She can get over her fears - just check that you aren't keeping them in them as well because of how you deal with her when she has them. Its looking at things from a different angle that will resolve it.

Good luck - you are good dog owners.

Skullcap & Valerian or Zylkene ( Bought off the vet internet sites) http://www.zylkene.co.uk/whatiszylkene.asp

The skullcap & Valerian has to be given during the days running up to bonfire night, my experience with them is that they need time to get into the system first not just given on that day ie some dogs need them for travelling too..maybe 3 a day
