the pub wont survive, same as the norfolk, and the aldi only sells tat, it wont compete with the asda.

Wanna bet?!! Aldi don't sell tat at all - they sell quality products but at a price that major supermarkets sell their nasty 'economy', 'value' & 'savers' range at! And they have great 'special buys' too - for example, one of the items they've started selling today is a cooking stand for camping at £19.99 which Argos sell for £34.99 and Go Outdoors sell at £24.99 (and this is supposedly at a cardholder's discounted price too!)

Funny - you don't find Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco's internationally - Aldi must be doing something right!!

Does anyone know when building will start on the new Aldi store on Handsworth Road. Or has there been a change of plan. The site was cleared several months ago but nothing appears to be happening.

Not read any other posts so sorry if repeat info, the Aldi is well under way & should be complete pretty soon. The footings have been dug for the pub & that should be going up very soon :)

What I really want to know is why Aldi and Lidl are getting planning permission all over the country to open new stores on the doorsteps of already established supermarkets?

For example if Tesco had put in planning permission to build a store the exact same size, selling the same type of products as Aldi on Handsworth road it would have been refused. So why the hell is Aldi allowed to do this?

Its their business model! Take a look at all the new Aldis and Lidls sprouting up around the country, nearly all of them are just across the road from already established supermarkets.

Another example is in Dinnington. Aldi just opened a store next to the indoor market and Tesco. Basically it means anyone coming from the housing estates or to Tesco via the bus station has to WALK PAST the Aldi to get to Tesco. Yet if you applied for example for permission to sell hot sausage rolls right outside a Gregs in Sheffield city centre, you would get refused because your just trying to unfairly take away business from Gregs.

I am generally in support of business freedoms but it just seems unfair that these German companies are allowed to get away with things their British owned counterparts could not.

Strange that ASDA seems to have put many prices up recently.

Are they getting ready to have big reductions all round (back to just above what the prices used to be so no real loss) for when Aldi opens?

Then big advertising campaign – look at our price cuts – xx% off across the whole range.
