So Sheffield City Centre is HISTORY??

There is a lot of Meadowhall slagging on this thread, in my opinion, it is the best thing that ever happened to Sheffield.

If it was up to some people we would still be wandering round the same old shops, selling the same old tat in Sheffield City centre. I now go to Sheffield twice a year, once will be on sunday for 'fright night' the next time will be to see the sheffield Christmas lights switched on (and that's only to make the kids happy)

Town centre shopping is DEAD, long live the shopping Mall.

Are you saying Meadowhell isn't full of the same old shops, selling the same old thing? Don't make me laugh.

You mustn't be looking hard. I've never been to the Moor without seeing people walking around with cans of Special Brew. Fargate always has its fair share too. Around Division Street area I always encounter a couple of them sat on the Walls around The Forum and they also congregate around Bargain Booze at the top of West Street. The area around The Bankers Draft goes without saying

Exaggerating much?

The cost of parking has definitely contributed to the demise of Sheffield centre.

Why would any one want to pay £1.70 an hour in Sheffield centre, when it’s free at Meadowhall all day?

I agree. The lack of free parking is slowly killing off the city center.

Obviously Meadowhell has taken it's toll on the city center but i still find everything i want in town. I'm not lazy. I don't mind walking around our city center, taking in the great architecture on my way. It's miles better than looking at sterile marbled walls and floors.

I would suggest you don't really know the city center. Castle market is downtrodden but that doesn't mean the people inside are any worse than those operating from their nice sterile environments in Meadowhell. The Moor is going through a long winded regeneration. Fargate is just trying to be a small slice of what Meadowhell is.

In my opinion, the city center still has almost everything Meadowhall has. The things it doesn't have, i don't want anyway.

Agree with this post

Not sure about that. Meadowhall isn't exactly classy clientele but last time I checked the town centre in the day time was just drunks, drug addicts and down-and-outs.

Simply untrue. I live in the town centre and don't recognise your description at all.

Neither do i. I was in Castle market yesterday morning and it was rammed with people. I didn't see anyone drunk or drugged up either. Shocker!

I agree that Sheffield Town Centre is embarrassing for such a big city in terms of shopping and attractions. But then again, Sheffield has never been considered alongside the likes of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, or even Leeds or Newcastle. Something went wrong somewhere along the line in terms of Sheffield's appeal to tourists

I guess the difference is that these (other) places have a large population in surrounding towns/ cities (e.g. Manchester is the "city centre" for people in Oldham/ Bolton/ Stockport, Newcastle is the "city centre" for a large ring of population around Gateshead/ Tyneside/ Northumberland, Birmingham has a million people living in the towns/cities nearby)...

...whilst Sheffield has a huge swathe of empty countryside around the outskirts of the city. Nice as the Peak District (obviously) is, it does mean that Sheffield shops are only really appealing to Sheffield (and Rotherham) people, rather than to tens/hundreds of thousands of others.

I went into town today, because I need some gloves from Primark. Could have drove to Meadowhall, but I hate it when its really busy, and would rather walk around outside anyway.

Town wasn't too bad, apart from the slow people who always seem to be walking in front of me :(

Didn't get harrased too much by the various charity/survey people on Fargate.

But how strong was the smell of urine?

That depends on if you stick your face down the urinal in the toilets i suppose. The only smell from the market area was of meat and fish.
